Atlantic salmon is the third-largest salmon, behind only the Siberian Taimen and the Pacific Chinook.
Its remote location in the North Atlantic, clear waters, cool steady temperatures, strong currents and protected fjords make the Faroe Islands the perfect place for salmon. Here people have lived off the ocean for centuries and have strong traditions for respecting nature’s resources. This is also reflected in high standards for sustainability in local fish farming. This Fangst salmon has been flash grilled and preserved in cold pressed locally produced rapeseed (canola) oil.

Very good, firmer than some other canned salmon but still had nice moisture. The grilled flavor was present and delicious, setting this tin apart from others I’ve had. As for the oil, it was essentially flavorless as you’d expect from canola, allowing the fish to do the heavy lifting. There was no mistaking that this was salmon -not overly so but it was that distinctive flavor especially when eaten by itself.
Why not 5 stars? It fell short of great … and at this price, it really needs to be at that superstar level when something (great) like a Trader Joe’s smoked salmon tin is available for $5 ish. Plus, when you think of how absolutely transformative to the genre that Fangst brought to sardines, how they have a completely mind-blowing set of tins there that flip your perception fully upside down … well, this one doesn’t come close to hitting the same. It’s totally fine, it’s delicious, but it’s not in a tier by itself.
I’ve had fresh Faroe Islands salmon several times and what sets it apart for me is the buttery richness, the soft flakey decadence that makes you take a step back. This tin didn’t have any of those Faroe characteristics so while it was definitely enjoyed & appreciated, I think I’ll use those extra few dollars to instead get some more *other* Fangst tins.

This was my first time trying tinned salmon. I tried it on it’s own first. I have always loved salmon. This tin has a really clean flavor that I enjoyed, but was perhaps a little weak on it’s own.
I then tried it on toasted sourdough with crème fraîche, thinly sliced English cucumbers and radishes and topped with pickled red onions. I added large pieces of salmon, so as not to loose all of the flavor. It was delicious!

I had to drop my cooking and rush to my computer to review after my first taste. The grilled flavor was up front and delicious, and the fish was tender and flaky. The oil had a nice smoky flavor to it, I’m using the tin to make rice bowls and the oil is delicious drizzled over top

I’ll be honest, I ate this straight out of the can as a quick dinner. Maybe that influenced my review but it was just fine? I thought it would have more smokey or charred flavor and I hoped the oil would add more flavor too.
