This is not a sauce like you might imagine from the name…there’s no tomato in it. We’ve asked where the term comes from, but no one seems to know. The “sauce” is sunflower oil and spices, mostly paprika as far as we can tell. Delicious straight from the tin, or also makes a great dunking garnish for a bloody mary at brunch.

Without question, the best tinned octopus I’ve ever had … and at at this price?! Wow. Texture was spectacular, not rubbery in the least with a very pleasant medium-firm bite – it’s exactly what I was hoping for. Moisture was perfect, salt levels were spot on. The sauce is effectively paprika-flavored oil, very mild yet flavorful and made for an excellent companion to the octopus.
I ate this straight from the tin at room temp and would absolutely do that again … but this octopus flavor/texture is such a standout that it can hold up to many different recipes without disappearing. Next time, I think I’ll put it on some flatbread. Should you order this? YES.
