Fangst Danish Freshwater Trout (Regnbue Ørred) Smoked, with Juniper and Lemon Thyme

$11.50

In his childhood, Martin co-founder of FANGST, enjoyed his many visits on trout farms with his father, a biologist dedicated to developing world-class farming of trout in Danish freshwater. In this can, we have preserved a bit of that memory – and some delicious tinned smoked trout with juniper and lemon thyme.

Absolutely beautiful trout. The texture has not been compromised even a little bit. Firm, flaky but, not tough. Superb flavor.

This is my first canned trout and it is truly immaculate. The texture is perfectly tender and flaky and not dry. The juniper really shines through for a unique, yet familiar accent. The filets look beautifully pink and striated. There is an ideal level of smoke flavor that doesn’t overpower the other seasonings at play. I found myself picking out the smallest of pieces to prolong savoring the flavors. It was like fish candy. If I could eat this every day I would. As a word of caution I would not recommend serving this on something warm, it seemed to be a detriment to the texture.

This is my second Fangst product and I am unsure as to which I like more, as far as tinned trout goes this is on the firm side with a bold flavor, I didn’t really get the juniper and thyme flavors individually but combined with the fish and smoke it make for a delicious bite, I’m wondering if they hot smoked it before tinning to achieve that texture, I served it on some crusty bread with sliced figs and its own oil, fantastic, this will be in my regular rotation now.

everything i’ve tried from fangst is top notch and this trout is no exception. the oil is so delicious! this might just be me but i find that the thyme aroma reminds me of roast chicken.

Hands down, this tin was the favorite of my order. I was shocked at how delicious it was and disappointed I hadn’t tried it before. I have added it to my list of must have pantry staples. It is a bit of a splurge; but some things are simply worth it!

I tried this tin… three weeks ago now, I think? and I can’t stop thinking about it. I ate it in an autumn salad with in-season veg and dried fruit; used the oil to shake up a little honey vinaigrette. The fish was the perfect texture – semi-firm, flaking beautifully. This is a great trout for someone who’s newer to tinned fish, but I think also great for someone who wants to try new flavors!
I definitely need to reorder this, because I want to eat it on a slice of crusty bread now!!

Oh my god, this was good. We ate them straight out of the tin. The trout itself was so flavorful… the juniper and thyme were perfect accompaniments without being overwhelming. This would be a great intro tin for someone interested in trying tinned fish, but not quite sure where to start. It was fresh, light, and upon reflection, wonderfully versatile in that it could be enjoyed many, many ways. Next time I’ll be copying some previous reviewers’ ideas… they all sound too delicious to pass up.

Absolutely amazing! Juniper and thyme appears just slightly with pronounced flavor that isn’t overwhelming. I’ve never had canned trout before and regret waiting this long! Buy this tin. You won’t regret it whether you are eating it alone, with crackers, or accompanying a pasta/salad.

Cracked open this tin today for lunch, beautifully intact pinkish white trout filet inside. Open opening the aroma of smokiness and herbs was immediately apparent with almost no fishy smell as far as tins go. Served with some herbal crackers.

The texture of this tin was smooth and buttery and was not too firm or soft and what I enjoyed the most about this tin. While you can absolutely taste the juniper and thyme, I found the saltiness of the tin to be overpowering to those flavors and I feel it ended up putting the taste out of balance. I am wondering if it was just my tin as no other reviewers mentioned the salt level. I will likely try this tin again to see if the saltiness was an anomalies because the other taste profiles and texture was awesome.

Wow! What a marvelous can of trout! Great appearance in the tin, the pretty pinkish hue of the fish, with a little bit of the juniper and lemon thyme on top of the filet, it’s a very appealing piece of fish. The texture itself is firm, but still flakes apart easily, very easy to take apart piece by piece with some chopsticks.

The herbal flavors are brightened by the lemon thyme. There’s also a really nice balance between the smoke flavor along with the herbs/juniper, that also don’t overpower the mellow vibe of the trout itself. And the remaining oil is downright drinkable (we seriously sipped every drop of the oil). We ate these with simple crackers, and I wouldn’t add any flavoring like sauces as it really doesn’t need it. Because I saw it mentioned in one other review, I’ll say that I didn’t find it to be too salty at all, you can taste that there’s salt, but it didn’t feel “salty,” I found it less salty than most commercially available smoked salmon-type products.

The only other canned trout I’ve had was the Cole’s trout with lemon and cracked pepper (also amazing), and while this was a very different product (Cole’s Trout is extremely soft/tender where this is firm and flaky as well as also being a lot stronger flavor wise) I would say it’s similar in quality. $11.50 isn’t cheap by any means, but I would definitely get this can again as a tasty stand-alone lunch treat.
