This tin is packed solid with small, a little over 2” long, fish…14 fish in this tin…bits of onion and a bay leaf on the bottom…
The flesh is firm with a great chew…totally different flavor from a sardine…stronger but not fishy…heading toward the mackerel end of the spectrum…the sauce is delicious…piquant but not vinegary…hints of pepper and paprika…complex…a fair hit of salt, but not overdone…Delicious!!…..They are worth the price.
I ate this straight out of the tin like the heathen I am, with pieces of Sourdough (SKH) to sop up that delicious sauce…and a side of Pickled Green Tomato’s (DS Homemade), all together a spot on combination of flavors.

This was a real treat. Opening the can the smell was very reminiscent of a jar of pickled herring. There were lots of little firm guys in there. The pleasant fishy taste paired very well with the vinegary sauce and slightly sweet onions. The flavor just builds and improves as you progress through the can. Real good time.

Delicious tin. One that we keep coming back to for the amazing escabeche sauce. Tastes best straight out of the tin. My partner who doesn’t normally like Mackeral likes this one! I could see it being nice on a crusty baguette too, doesn’t really need anything addd to it to appreciate it fully

It’s not you, it’s me. I love pickled things and I love piri-piri and spices and I love mackerel, but it turns out I don’t like pickled fish. I’ve never been a fan of pickled herring, but wanted to give this tin a try since I love Jose Gourmet and all the attributes listed above. It is more mild than the pickled herring I’ve tried but sadly it still has a sweetness (from the onions? unsure here because I like onions, especially pickled onions) that I dislike in my fish. I encourage anyone who loves escabeche or pickled herring to give this one a go, though! The fish were fairly small (maybe 10 or more in the tin) and had a nice texture, and there are lots of onion bits at the bottom to scoop up.
