This is a beautiful, delicious tin of fish. Cracking this tin open I found three large, shiny silver-skinned sardines – about as large as I’ve seen in a tin. If it’s alright to call a tinned sardine beautiful, these definitely look the part to me.

Plucking these out of the tin shows that they might be a bit on the soft side – not that they feel like they’d fall apart, but that the flesh yields a bit to pressure. Taking a bite proves that they are on the soft/medium-soft side, but given their large size, they still give your teeth some work to do.

On the palate, despite their potentially intimidating size, they’re nice, mild, mellow fishy. Though it’s a mellow flavor, fish is what you get – the ingredients are sardines, oil, and salt, and the salt is fairly minimal, not contributing much to the flavor profile. I ate these pretty much straight out of the tin, and I loved them. Given their pure approach to the flavor profile, I think these would work well with just about any prep and ingredients. For this price, If you like ‘dines, I think these are just about as good as you can get.

“For the purist,” eh? 100% agree, these are NFBD – no frills but delicious. Quite possibly the most shimmery-skinned giant sardines that exist, it’s quite a beautiful tin to open up. Texturally similar to Matiz (that is, 2 out of 5 on firmness) but with more flavor. They don’t flake upon chew because they’re soft, but it’s not an objectionable texture in any way. I enjoyed these quite a bit, straight from the tin at room temp with just a little flaky salt.

If I crave a giant pilchard in otherwise-unflavored olive oil, I’m going with Ati Manel or Sardinha … and that’s an easy decision. Ati Manel quality is a notch up from plain Nuri, and a few notches higher than Matiz. While I do prefer their flavored sardine tins, this is absolutely an excellent pure sardine experience as advertised. Try this brand!

Amazing tin of sardines! While not super fancy with any extras or additions, the quality of the ‘dines doesn’t need anything else. I’m a fan of sardines that have the scales/bones, feel like these hold up better with their bite and firmness. These did a great job of that and honestly weren’t super “fishy” despite the simplicity. I think this is a good starter tin for sardines, so you can see what quality and taste SHOULD be, and then you can go from there! I served these with simple toasted sourdough and pickled purple onion. Delish.

Simple and high quality, an excellent tin of sardines. 4 large shiny silver sardines tightly packed into the tin with olive oil and some salt. Their meat is soft but they are big sturdy fish, for sardines, that hold up well to being transported out of the tin. These would be a great snack enjoyed by themselves. I was a little hungrier and put them over couscous with their oil and capers which made a great light meal. In the category of no frills, for the purists, sardines, this is a 5/5 for me.
