The terms “spiced” and “spicy” are used pretty much interchangeably in the tinned fish world, to mean two different things: with a hot pepper (or hot pepper flavor), and with cloves/bay/carrot/hot pepper. There are many examples of both terms being used to mean both things.
We are so frustrated by how widespread this confusing inconsistent usage is that we’ve gone through our entire product line to correct the incorrect ones such that our description of “spiced” or “spicy” will always indicate which it really is, regardless of the packaging. “Spicy” = with hot pepper flavor. “Spiced” = with the cloves/bay/carrot/hot pepper flavors.

Best spiced mackerel! It edges out Nuri spiced mackeral because this Briosa has the superior moisture and texture. Brilliant spiced flavors and the “little bit of zip” description is very fitting. Each bite has a tiny amount of chew that is perfect and not over-the-top like Patagonia mackerel chew … it is an absolute perfect medium texture that also doesn’t get stuck between in your teeth like many other tinned mackerel does so easily. (That’s not just me, right?)
It’s honestly difficult to imagine that a better spiced mackerel exists. Briosa Gourmet is to spiced mackerel as King Oscar is to Mediterranean mackerel. And that is a huge, huge compliment. Get this tin.

I found this spiced mackerel to be very comparable to the Nuri tin except in one way – spice! Perhaps I just ended up with a particularly spicy pepper, but this fish was significantly hotter than the Nuri. I enjoy both equally and love flaking the beautiful filets onto some thin crackers.

This was a very fine tin of spiced mackerel, very reminiscent of the Nuri version. Cracking open the lid I was presented with the mild clove essence that I’m now very familiar with. Had three large fillets that were jammed packed in there, took a bit to get them out in one piece. The texture was very moist and the taste was rather mild and meaty. Comparing the two I would actually give the slight edge to Briosa over the Nuri! Well worth trying out if you want to experience mackerel fillets in the Portuguese spiced tradition.

7.8/10. I found this mackerel to be drier than Nuri’s spiced mackerel and the spices were not as enjoyable. I’ve had the regular mackerel from this brand and enjoyed that one better.

My recent experience may shine light on the differences in opinion reflected in earlier reviews. I’ve now had four of these same cans from Briosa, and I’ve had two I’d describe as a bit dry and tough, while the other two were tender and flaky. No idea why—different batches? Fish caught at different times of year? Different lengths of time in inventory? But even within the range, these mackerel fillets were all dependably good. I had them as salad toppers, as the stars of fish tacos, and just served up on crackers with hot sauce—they served honorably in each role. I’ll happily buy them again.
