A newly released tin from Fangst?! I’m all about it. Just as you’d expect from this fantastic cannery, the salmon is definitely top shelf quality. Beautiful fillet upon opening with plenty of buckthorn and verbena on top and in the oil. Perfectly seasoned and I had no desire/need to add anything to it whatsoever. The lemon flavor was a nice little background note and brought a little extra complexity that I don’t remember being in the no.1 Fangst salmon tin. The salmon itself is skinless with a medium firmness & density, along with a medium level of moisture. The flake is most noticeable upon chew (as opposed to when you try to get a bite). I enjoyed this at room temp, straight from the tin … but next time? I’m going to warm this up slowly & gently, serve it atop some pasta with the buckthorn & verbena oil … faaaancy.

This was so yummy! My favorite tin of salmon that I’ve had so far and my favorite Fangst tin, it was perfect for me. As usual for Fangst, the box feels elegant and high quality and the gold tin adds another level of fancy. Inside the tin was a beautiful filet that filled the tin with a generous amount of the herbs and surrounded by golden oil. I had a bite plain and it was perfectly balanced with the seasoning and delicious salmon flavor, not fishy or with any part too strong. I ate the rest over some warm rice noodles and it was comforting and filling, so scrumptious. I appreciated the fact that the salmon was skinless and the texture was flaky with a medium chew, not too soft or firm, again just how I personally like it. I enjoyed everything about this tin and I will definitely purchase it again.

This is the first tin of fish I have ever had and let me just say WOW. To be a bit dramatic, this tin changed my life. I will definitely be integrating this into my life as a major part of my diet. I had it very simply on toasted sourdough bread with cream cheese and dipped the extra sourdough bread in the oil. Every bite was perfect! Absolutely recommending to my friends and family!

This was simply lovely over linguine – tho it was a bit slim for a portion for two. The herbed oil was lovely, and the salmon medium firm and tender. Another great tin for a spectacular and easy weeknight meal!

Pure decadence. I’ve loved every tin of Fangst I’ve tried thus far, but this is the first one that has me considering placing another order having just finished the tin. Made some minute rice with butter, salt and a few grinds of Szechuan pepper in the rice cooker, and set the tin on top once it had finished cooking and switched over to warming. Springy fish with a good flake, light citrus flavor. No skin or bones. Having a few bites with the rice on a fork was good, but what really set things off was mashing the whole filet up, pouring the oil from the can over everything and making a fork homogenate of delight. I think I’m about to order another couple cans honestly.

Oy! I am so conflicted…I want to want to be blown away by this–but I’m not. Don’t get me wrong: this is a fine tin o’fish from a very fine producer. By all means, go ahead & order it. And please oh please, convince me that it’s a lapse in palate that left me unwowed. I found the salmon a tad dry, the seasoning a bit timid (I could barely taste the lemon), & the overall experience unmemorable. I could pep it up with condiments, but as someone once observed, shoe leather a la provencale probably would be tasty. This laks ain’t no shoe leather, & I’d rather not drown it in sauce.

Was delighted to see one nice, hefty filet when I opened this tin, coated in the flavoring. Overall, the flavors of this tin were pretty subdued and the salmon was a tiny bit more firm than I expected, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. The flavor came out a little more with a sprinkle of salt and I thoroughly enjoyed this tin on sourdough toast with some homegrown tomatoes, fresh parsley, and a squeeze of lemon juice.

I really wanted to love this tin, especially for the price, but it didn’t impress. I’d think of this as a relatively blank canvas – the flavor is not overpowering, and slightly mineral, but I found it very under-salted. I ended up serving over sushi rice with soy sauce and mirin to really bring out the flavor. Some lemon would also have been great. Unfortunately, I found the flavor of the verbena and buckthorn to be non-existent, despite being plentiful in the tin. The oil had a nice flavor, but it didn’t really penetrate into the fish, which was definitely on the dry side.

Coming from Fangst I was surprised the flavors were so subtle, and maybe even a little underseasoned? Visually it was a beautiful single fillet, with a clean and mild flavor, but I tried it with a number of different condiments and settled on a tiny drop of soy sauce and half a pickled pearl onion on a Ritz, but a salted chili crisp would be terrific too. If I were to get this again I would reserve it for cooking with or pairing with other foods as part of a larger dish. Terrific quality overall, but I couldn’t pick up on the buckthorn or verbena.

This was a very disappointing tin. I picked it out mainly for my partner who enjoys salmon and lemon/citrus with her fish. I’m not a big fan of lemon/citrus, but that flavor was actually pretty mild here so that wasn’t the issue. Instead, the main issue here for both of us was just how dry the salmon was. We tried it straight out of the tin and it was dry and bland. Then we warmed it in a pan with some oil from the tin and it was equally dry and bland. We were both just seriously underwhelmed with this tin and ended up just using it as filler for some fish tacos along with another tin that we enjoyed far more. I simply cannot recommend this tin, especially at this price.

This salmon was meaty and firm, a little dry even, but the flavor was delicate and enjoyable. It’s a little earthy without being too heavy, and was great with an extra sprinkle of salt, cheese, or a pickle because the fish itself is not very salted on its own. I’ve never had sea buckthorn before this so I didn’t know what to expect, but I’m glad I tried it.
