La Barca Sardines in Olive Oil with Lemon
$6.50
Really the only way to settle the debate over who makes the best sardines, the Spanish, the Portuguese, or the French is to do some side-by-side tastings.

Great tin o’ lemon sardines at a great price! I’m a big fan of this sardine style so this tin really hit the mark for me. It’s rare to see lemon in a sardine tin from Spain (why is that?) so this immediately ranks at the top of that tangy Spanish subcategory. Texture, flake, and moisture were all above average, easily matching and/or exceeding my expectations prior to opening the tin. The lemon flavor was natural, the seasoning was on point, the oil was noticeably a half step above its competition at this price point. I’ll be buying this one again for sure … and with this first La Barca experience now under my belt, I’m even more excited to try all of their other tins. Recommended.

I was extremely impressed by La Barca’s small sardines in olive oil so I was excited to try these. The tin was packed with four absolutely CHONKY sardines. I tried a bite on its own and I did not think it was overly citrusy. I put them on avocado toast with the few bits of preserved lemon that were in the tin. Still felt like it needed more punch so I added fresh lemon and a few drops of yellowbird jalapeno hot sauce. I just felt like the fish weren’t tender enough for me. I won’t be ordering again. My favorite is still Ferrigno La Bonne’s Mer Sardines au Citron Confit (w/ Preserved Lemon and Green Olives)
