Description

Ingredients: Sardines (Sardina pilchardus)(70%), Olive Oil (27%), Piri-Piri (2%), and Salt.

The terms “spiced” and “spicy” are used pretty much interchangeably in the tinned fish world, to mean two different things: with a hot pepper (or hot pepper flavor), and with cloves/bay/carrot/hot pepper. There are many examples of both terms being used to mean both things.

We are so frustrated by how widespread this confusing inconsistent usage is that we’ve gone through our entire product line to correct the incorrect ones such that our description of “spiced” or “spicy” will always indicate which it really is, regardless of the packaging. “Spicy” = with hot pepper flavor. “Spiced” = with the cloves/bay/carrot/hot pepper flavors.

Well this was an absolutely magnificent tin of piri-piri sardines! Had three large chonkers swimming in bright red olive oil. At the bottom was a large chili pepper that was the length of my index finger. Placed them on my sourdough toast – texture was rather firm but still soft enough to flake apart onto the bread. Drizzled some of the chili-infused oil on top and had a wonderful lunch. The heat level was rather impressive – I would give it a 2.5 to 3 stars out of 5, it was that pronounced! It was even spicier than the Sardinha Dragon tin and just a shade lighter then Nuri Extra Spiced. It left a pleasant tingle on my palate for a good 10 minutes after the meal was finished. Seasoning was spot-on also.
The only thing that prevents this tin from being a top contender is the price – there are other tins that provide a similar (but not quite as spicy) experience as these for a few dollars less. That said, this is the piri-piri tin that actually brings the pepper experience and is worth trying out at least once.

Wonderful moisture, brilliant flake, but not very spicy. Easy to appreciate this medium-soft texture for sure. I’m a little jealous of the previous reviewer as my tin hit only 2 (at most) out of 5 on the spicy scale, but was delicious nonetheless. Reminded me of the Sardinha special edition dragon tin. Lucas has some extremely high quality sardines, I’ve been quite impressed with the brand overall … might have to try this one again to see if I get lucky with a hotter tin next time.
