Luças Small Sardines (Petingas) in Olive Oil

$8.50

Petingas aka sardinillas aka sardinettes are very small sardines. Some people prefer the chonkers and their spine action. Some people prefer the little guys, where all evidence of bones is completely melted away by the canning process. We like them both.

This turned out to be a really decent tin of small sardines. The tin was rather small (2.8 oz) and had a total of six petingas swimming in a nice creamy olive oil. Texture was just firm enough to come out of the tin without falling apart but were very tender and moist otherwise. Flavor was nice and meaty and the seasoning was perfect, not too salty for my palate.
All in all, this was a very nice tin but the main thing holding it back is the price – you can get an almost identical experience from some other brands (Berthe, LaBarca for example) for several dollars less. Still happy I tried this tin though.

A lot of flavor depth here, these hit quite hard with that little extra umami that you can find in the best tins. It’s absolutely ideal to eat on its own without any sauces/salt/anything else added. Texture was a lovely medium-soft, each bite so flaky and moist. A little splurgey but it definitely feels like I got what I paid for here – this is a top notch Portuguese small sardine that everyone should try at least once. They compare favorably with the Sardinha small sardines that I also loved … I’ll probably have to buy another tin of each and put them in a head-to-head competition!
