Mabuti Sardines in Olive Oil and Tomato Sauce

$8.50

Long rumored to be the same as Nuri with different packaging and a lower price, those who have actually tried both side by side say there are detectable differences, most notably the size of the fish are smaller in the Mabuti than the Nuri. The tin is also smaller.

A great ‘regular’ tomato sardine. Mabuti is definitely a pleasant medium texture here, not in any way dry or chalky. You get a *little* of the firmer outer surface here (like was present in the non-tomato tin) but only if you’re really looking for it. The flake was present but not as evident as before. Yet again, it was MUCH easier to get a Mabuti tomato sardine out of the tin and they held up better than any other tomato’d sardine that I’ve had.

The tomato sauce was great, truly great. Based on my memory of the unspiced Nuri tomato tin, it feels like it’s exactly the same. There’s nothing to complain about here – the sauce has the right amount of thickness, salt, slight sweetness, everything. If only Mabuti had a spiced tomato tin, oh what fun that would be … but make no mistake, this is an exceptional tin of tomato’d sardines.

I did not think I would really like Sardines in Tomato Sauce. It turns out I really liked this tin. I ate them straight from the tin. What I really liked was that there was a nice amount of olive oil in the tin as well. So it had that rich olive oil taste with the tomatoes and sardines. I would highly recommend these to anyone — especially those who are hesitant to try Sardines in Tomato Sauce. I will order these again!

This was a wonderful tin of tomato sardines! Honestly the best way to describe it is “Nuri in Tomato Sauce but with little sardines”. Seeing that the cannery is Pinhais it makes perfect sense.

Cracking open the tin I was present with a total of six little fellas in a rich looking tomato sauce. Texture was firm enough to get them out in whole pieces but they flaked apart easily onto bread. The olive oil/tomato sauce mixture tasted identical to what I’ve had from Nuri – which is a good thing! Dare I say I like the Mabuti tin over the Nuri since the smaller fish were able to have the oil and tomato penetrate the flesh better.

In conclusion perhaps the best tin of tomato sardines (excluding Nuri Spiced Tomato, that’s in a class by itself) I’ve ever had the pleasure of sampling. I only wish the serving size was larger!
