Description

Ingredients: Sardines, olive oil, carrot, pickled cucumber, piri-piri chili pepper, salt.

Preserves of 100% Portuguese production.

The excellence of our products is a result of the elevated quality of the fish and the traditional production method.

The fish is selected and prepared manually in order to achieve a product of superior quality.

The terms “spiced” and “spicy” are used pretty much interchangeably in the tinned fish world, to mean two different things: with a hot pepper (or hot pepper flavor), and with cloves/bay/carrot/hot pepper. There are many examples of both terms being used to mean both things.

We are so frustrated by how widespread this confusing inconsistent usage is that we’ve gone through our entire product line to correct the incorrect ones such that our description of “spiced” or “spicy” will always indicate which it really is, regardless of the packaging. “Spicy” = with hot pepper flavor. “Spiced” = with the cloves/bay/carrot/hot pepper flavors.

This one is in between, it has the pickled vegetables but not the clove and bay.

Easy to enjoy this tin. Not very spicy, relatively mild seasoning considering the labeling but it certainly has its place. Texture and moisture were both above average, flavor was solid, quality of the fish was clearly excellent. I do believe this is my favorite Minerva tin from the few that I’ve tried. While I do think that some more assertive seasonings could take this up a few notches, it was still a very good tin that could be the ideal gateway for people who aren’t sure if they want to go all in with a spicier sardine quite yet. Worth trying.

This was a pretty decent tin! Best way to describe it is “Nuri Spiced without the Clove”. Cracking open I was presented with the familiar piri-piri and sardine essence which dissipated quickly. Three large chonkers were packed neatly and the oil had a reddish-orange hue.
Placed them on my usual sourdough toast – the texture was nice and meaty, not too firm. I had a decent level of spice in my sample, it lingered on the palate for a bit after I was finished. Perhaps the absence of the clove brought the pepper more to the forefront. I got one piri-piri and three carrot slices, the veggies were pickled as advertised.
All in all a nice representation of the Portuguese spiced sardine and I would have this tin in my pantry alongside the Nuri Spiced for some variety.

Not very spicy but one of my favorite tender tins! The sardines are so soft and easy to enjoy. I decided to take this tin to the test over some pasta and it was the perfect choice.
