See what Matthew Carlson thinks about extra spicy Nuri.

Check out the Mouth Full of Sardines blog post about this tin.

The terms “spiced” and “spicy” are used pretty much interchangeably in the tinned fish world, to mean two different things: with a hot pepper (or hot pepper flavor), and with cloves/bay/carrot/hot pepper. There are many examples of both terms being used to mean both things.

We are so frustrated by how widespread this confusing inconsistent usage is that we’ve gone through our entire product line to correct the incorrect ones such that our description of “spiced” or “spicy” will always indicate which it really is, regardless of the packaging. “Spicy” = with hot pepper flavor. “Spiced” = with the cloves/bay/carrot/hot pepper flavors.

This particular tin is both spiced and spicy, as it has extra piri piri added.

Nuri’s are really popular, and can be quite delicious. Since these cans are hand packed and hand processed, my experience shows the taste can vary greatly from can to can. Heat and salt levels seem to be the flavors in the Nuri Spiced Sardines that varies the most.

I’ve had 2 cans (so far) of the EXTRA SPICY version on this page. The first can, I removed the fish from the tin, and enjoyed them straight off the plate. They were very tasty, but in fact, the flavor was pretty bland, with only the faintest hint of heat coming through. The second can I ate straight from the tin, and this time, they were noticeably spicier than the usual Nuri Spiced Sardines, but not as spicy as Flower Brand.

The were very tasty, great quality fish, there were extra peppers in the can (as described), and in the end your tin may or may not be spicier than the usual Nuri offering. The best advice I can share is to eat them from the tin if you want to maximize the spiciness of the peppers.

Maybe 3 stars is too low, but I’m not a huge Nuri fan to start with, and I would have happily gone 4 or 5 stars if these were more assertive in being “Extra Spicy.” Having said that I’ll bump it up to 4, it was spicier after all….

I ate the third can last night. It’s flavor profile was different from the first two in my review above. The fish in this tin, which I ate from a plate out of the tin, were quite noticibly more spicy than either of the other two tins. There you have it: three Nuri tins; three different tastes.

Nuri spiced sardines are at the top of the list, rightfully so, for many tinned sardine aficionados, including myself. Being a fan of Nuri sardines and a fan of spicy foods, I didn’t hesitate to grab a few tins of this variety.

Upon opening the tin, these look, and smell, just like any other tin of Nuri spiced sardines. Before trying a bite of the plump sardines, I tried a sip of the oil and it definitely had a bit more heat to it than the regular spiced sardines. At first bite, however, I didn’t detect the same increased level of heat.

After finishing off the tin, I can conclude that these are a bit spicier than the standard Nuri spiced sardines, but if you measure heat on a scoville scale and seek an adrenaline rush with each bite, you may be disappointed. You can’t go wrong with Nuri spiced sardines, and if you like a bit of extra heat, these will make a fine meal or snack.

What are we even doing here… eating delicious fish from a can. I ordered these after finding Mathew Carlson on YouTube. Great sardines, will be ordering more!

*Definitely* have some extra heat here, a little more than I was expecting. For my palate, it was about as spicy as I’d want out of any can before I would start to enjoy it less.

I really liked -but not quite loved- them straight out of the tin. I had 3 big, big fish with very noticeable heat, great texture, hot oil that had developed *flavor* and not just heat, and some fun carrot / cucumber slices as well. It’s probably not a rebuy for me because it really feels like it needs more than my standard “room temp from the can” approach but boy, was this a fun one to try.

If you’re the type of person who (1) gets sad because most hot sardine tins are absolutely lying about being hot, and (2) loves to eat spicy sardines on rice, noodles, etc then these are absolutely a buy for you.

I like sushi quite a bit but have always disliked the taste of canned tuna/tuna salad I’ve had. I found the r/cannedsardines subreddit a few weeks ago and was intrigued by the reviews and conversations I saw, so I got on the Rainbow Tomatoes Garden train and decided to grab this tin.

I think the big deterrent for me historically has been texture and flavor, so my thought process was to wade in with some flavored options. The spicy oil complemented the fish rather than outright disguising its natural taste, and I found the texture to be less stringy and overcooked than most tuna I’ve had. Overall a pleasant and fatty bite with a bit of kick on the rear – it definitely felt like it was a product that justified its price.

We tried a simple kewpie and Nuri salad, which ROCKED. The perfect amplification of this fish IMO. Tucked into a bit of seasoned sushi rice and wrapped with nori… super satisfying.

Finally, a tin with a little bit of heat! Opened the can to a quick whiff of sardines, Goldilocks in strength, and the sight of three fat fish lounging is a pool of orange, chile hued oil. On the bottom of the tin were the usual slice of carrot and pickle, with the three peppers and a pepper corn and a bit of bit of bay laurel leaf. The taste was very chile forward. I wouldn’t call them hot, but they are spicier than any other tin that I’ve had so far. Just enough to keep your lips and the tip of your tongue tingling for a while. The texture was juicy and soft. The oil was very flavorful, and I would like to drizzle it over some eggs, but I just used the standard bread mopping. Overall, a delicious tin of fish, one that I will be eating again.

    4⭐️/5⭐️
Same great taste and quality that one expects from Nuri sardines, just a little spicier! Would definitely re-purchase. ????️

So this was only my 2nd tin of sardines ever and I haven’t acquired a taste or feel for the bones yet so I did split these in half and had to remove the spine. That being said these were delicious and am definitely getting again. I love spice and these are not hot but a nice warming feeling and my only change would be to split the peppers to get even more flavor to infuse into oil of which was delicious and I mopped up every single drop of it with bread.

These came as advertised – packed a good amount of heat (more than I expected) and really took the high quality of normal Nuri spiced sardines up a level for me. We enjoyed these with some crusty bread – which was great with the spiced oil and also the carrot and pickles in the Nuri tins. We really loved them and would likely go back to these “extra spicy,” versions when ordering Nuri spiced sardines again.

After trying the Nuri Spiced Sardines and thinking they were just okay on the spicy scale this was a completely different animal, err. . .fish, you know what I mean. When they say extra spiced Nuri meant it, this has a nice burn that will make you clear your throat from time to time, and it’s not all a one-note, overpowering spiciness, this one has some depth to it. I thoroughly enjoyed this can of dines all by itself and will definitely purchase more. 9/10

Pleasantly surprised! A tin of spiced sardines that’s got a real bite. These are the classic Nuri quality sardines you love, but do not need extra hot sauce 🙂 Definitely adding to the regular rotation.

  13. straw.new.0g (verified owner)

My tin was slightly on the dry side, but that could vary between cans. The extra spice was nicely done. Fish was on the larger side.

  14. rsilver710 (verified owner)

I can see why these are a fan fave. Not fishy at all and provide a nice kick. I have a decent spice tolerance and these don’t make me sweat, but they have a heat that will linger in your mouth. I personally wasn’t able to notice the bones in these guys, so I definitely recommend this tin to anyone who is weary of trying bones, but loves spicy foods.

  15. emosberger (verified owner)

I wanted to try this tin to see how it compares with the regular Nuri spiced sardines. Whereas the normal tin seems to highlight the clove the extra spicy really brings out the pepper first and foremost. After finishing the tin the heat lingers on the palate for a while. I’ll definitely be getting these again – perhaps this would be a good candidate to age several years and see if the heat permeates the fish more?

  16. TinnedFishStoner (verified owner)

These Extra Spiced Nuri Sardines are my favorite so far, I will definitely be buying this one again. This one was noticeably spicier than the regular spiced Nuris I have eaten, I’m a lover of spicy foods and seafood so this hit both of those spots for me, and knowing that I already love Nuri items, I was so excited to try these. I love biting into all 3 of the little peppers they provide in the tin and just spilling their insides onto the sardines for that extra spice. The only thing is I hope the next tins of these I get will be a bit spicier, seeing as previous reviewers have mentioned that each extra spiced Nuri they have gotten has a different spice level. If I could rate these 5 stars I would though, these are top notch and I would definitely recommend these to anyone who is looking for a bit of a kick in their tinned fish, or even someone who is new to tinned fish but wants something spicy.

These sardines were a nice, firm, texture and nicely spiced. As someone else noted, they actually have noticeable spice which was a pleasant surprise. The pepper and carrot in the tin was a nice addition. We ate it over toasted bread rubbed with garlic and tomato, shallots, parsley, and a squeeze of lemon -was delicious! We will be adding these to our rotation.

This was my first time trying Nuri. The extra spiced sardines were nice quality fish, and much spicier than I’d expected from a Portuguese brand. The fish were so spicy that the flavors were a little unbalanced and I didn’t love eating them straight from the tin. The flavor of the clove takes a minute to identify underneath the spice, and the subtle bay leaf was completely overwhelmed.

I ate this tin on the road with half a sleeve of buttery Ritz-y crackers, but I would have preferred the sardines in a pasta or over hot rice.

these are definitely a favorite of mine now. i’ve been looking for a truly spicy tin, and while these aren’t THATTT spicy, they’re the spiciest tinned fish i’ve had. especially if you squeeze each of the chilis so the spicy juices and seeds come out oh man. after opening the tin, i flipped it upside down onto a plate and the oil was a stunning scarlet color. i tasted a little of it on its own & it had a delicious lingering heat — i bet this would be amazing in some kind of pasta like aglio e olio where you let the flavor of the oil shine. the pickle, peppercorn, carrot, & peppers on top of the fish are so pretty & a big reason why i love opening Nuri tins so much. the texture of the sardines is delightfully soft and moist which i love because i don’t like when it’s too dry or firm. i had these simple with crackers and french salted butter, with the occasional dab of hot sauce (which wasn’t really needed anyway because the fish was already flavorful on its own). get them! GET THEM!

These actually have a little kick. They’re not going to make you sweat, but the pleasant mouth tingle is there. I found the flavor to be very enjoyable. Definite repurchase for me.

Shocker (can you hear the sarcasm? 😉 ) – these were delicious! The wall of good reviews is valid, so if you’re looking for a spicy option, try these! For me, I’m not a huge fan of eating the spines, and they were very easy to remove from these without damaging the flesh. I put half of these into a sandwich, and ate the other half from the can. Can’t recommend these strongly enough!

  22. Daniel Herskovic (verified owner)

If I could only have 1 tin of sardines the extra spicy sardines by Nuri would be what I would choose. The heat was profound but manageable and the texture of the fish is really fantastic. This tin is a little pricey, but there are certainly more expensive options out there . There is a cool video online about the factory where Nuri is produced. Overall, I like this brand a lot!

  23. deenzandgreenz (verified owner)

Even the oil itself has the kick us spice lovers yearn for! I haven’t tried the regular spiced dines from Nuri, and now I have no reason to. These are perfect! Quality fish that is moist, spiced to the level the name implies, and easy to remove bones from if that’s your preference!

  24. linfinityandbeyond (verified owner)

A favorite tin for me! The spice level is perfect — I love it on toasted bread with sour cream, or in a pasta, or with some eggs diablo. They’re not burn your mouth off spicy – you can still taste the flavor of the fish.

  25. Joe Warren (verified owner)

Love the packaging! There is plastic covering, and then a paper wrapper surrounding the tin – nice touch!

There’s three big pieces with wonderful textured silver skin. The tin is filled to the brim with spicy oil. The consistency is decent although I would prefer them to be a bit more firm. Eating straight from the tin, the heat is detectable after a few seconds then lingers as a back of the palate/throat warmth. They aren’t unbearable, or will make you sweat, but they wholeheartedly fit the namesake of “spicy” without overpowering the fish. Looking to dial things up a little more? Nom on the included pepper! 🌶

Will gladly pick these up again when in the mood for a kick!

  26. HDNeal (verified owner)

Maybe the perfect tin (pun intended). The spice level is spot-on. The usual large high-quality Nuri sardines. While these fish are not hot, there is a detectable warmth. Not much more to add – great sardines, great spicing. Just buy and eat them.

These were really good. My favorite tin of sardines I’ve had so far. I really liked eating the peppers and the oil was seasoned really well.

OK so I’m officially sure now that I am not the intended audience for RTG’s new habenero sardines since this tin is my upper spice limit for a casual lunch. But I LOVED this tin—it got me back into sardines after a long hiatus!—and will be adding it to the regular rotation. Great on seed crackers with pickled onion. Would be fun to cook with.

  29. Maggie Cheuk (verified owner)

I love eating sardines and Nuri sardines are on the top of the list. With that in mind, the extra spicy sardines are my all time favorite because you actually feel a kick from this tin as opposed to other ones so you don’t need to dress it up with other sauces (unless you’d like to). An all-time classic made even better with a little extra pep!

They really are! I’ve never had a tin where I stopped midway for a drink or felt that lovely sinus-clearing sensation like this. It’s not that hot compared to a habanero hot sauce or something, but definitely the spiciest tin I’ve had. It’s also a nice complex spice flavor with the clove coming through. The fish is good as usual for Nuri, tender and appropriately fishy. I enjoyed them over white rice with sauteed spinach. The oil was tasty enough that I ended up dumping it all over the rice. I would get these again.

  31. Angelica (verified owner)

This was my first Nuri can, and I’m happy with it. The oil has a nice amount of spice, making this a great tin to add flavor to a meal, or to eat straight. The fish were tender and not too fishy either.

  32. Angelica (verified owner)

Packed in spice! I love the flavor of the oil with this tin. I haven’t tried the regular spiced tin yet, but I found this extra spicy version to have the perfect amount of kick. Had this alone, but would be great on rice.

  33. Paul Whaley (verified owner)

These Nuris were certainly a step up in heat from the standard Spiced ones. I’ve got a pretty medium heat tolerance, but still found myself wanting a little more burn out of these. The heat is slow to hit, but does provide a nice, warm mouth feel.

The deens themselves were a little softer than the standard Spiced Nuris, which I’d chock up to the extra peppers & capsaicin in the can. Still relatively firm, but not quite as much as the Spiced.

As other folks have said, these aren’t particularly fishy. The oil is great tasting too, and paired well when used as a dip with some Swedish flatbread. I’d easily buy these again.

  34. Nik Hamilton (verified owner)

An easy 10/10 for me. These were absolutely delish from the first bite to the last. So many great things here, texture was spot on, the oil was amazing and the spice level was perfection. These are a new favorite and I’ll probably include these in every single order.

  35. newsletteracct (verified owner)

Nuri just doesn’t miss for me, and these are no exception. Already a diehard fan of the normal spiced sardines, I gave these a try and they frankly surpass my old favorite! The extra spice worked perfectly with the fish smushed on a flatbread with some lemon and an eggplant & tomato spread.
