I am a freak for Nuri Spiced Sardines so I was excited to try these lemon ones. I didn’t enjoy them overall as much as the spiced variety, but they were the same delectable and delicate sardines and the lemon zing was noticeable and pleasant. I ate these with salt and pepper over white rice but next time I will try different ways to dress them up–they are a little plain just on their own.

You just know they’re going to be good when they’re Nuri, even when it’s only seasoned with a lemon. I will always prefer the spiced tins and the extra spiced tins in olive oil but this one was really nice for a lemon sardine tin. I personally think Nuri should have these released more often, it’s a shame didn’t make these for three years because these are perfect to either eat on their own or even cook into a meal of sorts. The lemon was very soft and easily fell apart so I could spread it across the deens (I had these on toast with salmon cream cheese) and I love the slight tangy sourness the lemon brings meanwhile the deens were firm and delectable and meaty.

I was so excited for this tin and it did not disappoint. Nuri sardines are always delicious and the extra spiced sardines are my all time favorite but this is definitely a close second. Whenever I get other tins with lemon, I feel like you can barely taste it even though you see a slice inside the tin. However, this tin did not disappoint. You can actually taste the acidity from the lemon in the tin, which helps cut any whisps of fishiness present that I usually find even in the best of tins. Of course, the sardines were delicious as always, no surprise there. I’m excited to eat my other tin of this and hope they continue making this instead of limiting production.

Who can resist a special edition?! Not me. Subtle lemon, juuuuust enough to notice that it’s there. Texturally, it’s a classic Nuri medium-soft with great flake and excellent moisture. Slightly underseasoned for my palate but that’s easy enough to adjust. I was happy to see some lemon slice/rind below the fillets and it certainly added a little boost to each bite. What a fun time.
I had this Nuri lemon tin side-by-side with Sadaf lemon sardines and it was a pretty substantial difference in lemon flavor (Sadaf having 2x more). If you love to get punched in the face with lemon, then you should modify your expectations here. But even though I love those way over-the-top-with-lemon tins, there is still plenty to enjoy in this one. The lemon isn’t strong but it’s also not artificial tasting. The traditional Nuri characteristics that we love are all fully present and in the end, this is a joy to eat. I’m going to look forward to cracking open my second tin of these.
