Patagonia Provisions Spicy Mussels

$8.00

There’s a fork in the road with tinned mussels: vinegar-based liquids and non-vinegar-based liquids. We enjoy both, but they are definitely worlds apart when it comes to texture. These are packed in non-vinegar-based liquid and are wonderfully firm and delicious, with just a little bit of zing from the cayenne pepper.

The Patagonia Provisions Guarantee (which we fully endorse and support):

We understand that fixing the broken food chain means sourcing ingredients that are grown, raised and harvested using methods that are friendly to our home planet.

But it doesn’t work if the foods we create aren’t mouth-wateringly, plate-lickingly delicious. That’s why we work with our favorite chefs to create foods that we love to eat and share.

If you ever order Provisions and aren’t 100% satisfied, we will happily refund you in full. In other words, we’re proud to stand by the flavor, nutrition, sourcing and quality of everything we make.

The terms “spiced” and “spicy” are used pretty much interchangeably in the tinned fish world, to mean two different things: with a hot pepper (or hot pepper flavor), and with cloves/bay/carrot/hot pepper. There are many examples of both terms being used to mean both things.

We are so frustrated by how widespread this confusing inconsistent usage is that we’ve gone through our entire product line to correct the incorrect ones such that our description of “spiced” or “spicy” will always indicate which it really is, regardless of the packaging. “Spicy” = with hot pepper flavor. “Spiced” = with the cloves/bay/carrot/hot pepper flavors.

OH YEAH. For the price these are excellent – meaty, generous portion, and tasty spicy oil. I prefer Ramon Peña’s spicy mussels BUT they’re pricier – and for the buck these make a fabulous weeknight meal over bread or pasta. I might ultimately prefer their sofrito mussels, but still these will FOR SURE be in my next order.

OH YEAH. For the price these are excellent – meaty, generous portion, and tasty, mildly spicy oil. I admit I much prefer Ramon Peña’s spicy mussels BUT they’re pricier – and for the buck these make a fabulous weeknight meal over bread or pasta. I might ultimately prefer their sofrito mussels, but still these will FOR SURE be in my next order.

Fantastic quality as you’d expect from any Patagonia mussel tin. Texturally perfect as always with very few chewy bits and no mushy bits. Spicier than I expected – enough to hit at least 2 out of 5 on the scale (if not 2.5). It’s been a long time since I had the sofrito mussels but in my head, this is a spicy version of that same tin … and it simply works. I added only a few flakes of salt and nothing else. In my mind, this is my new 2nd favorite Patagonia mussel variety behind the lemon herb. Absolutely delicious, consistent, and worth the purchase.

I eat most of my tinned fish over a rice with eggs, toasted sesame seeds, and scallions. The Patagonia Provisions Spicy Mussels were a pleasure! Slight spice and no overwhelming “fishy” taste from the mussels or the brine made it perfect to have as a quick, easy, and slightly fancy meal.

Large, beautiful clean mussels fill the tin, with chunks of red pepper and slivers of garlic, in an orange red broth…Nice.
The mussels have a nice firm chew, but there is some grit, have a very good mussel flavor, and there is HEAT!.
About the level of a full on bar hot wing, quite zippy for a tin, and it lingers!. Still the flavor of the mussels shines thru…delicious!
Had with Zerbe’s Old-Fashioned Kettle-Cooked Chips (cooked in LARD!…thank you Lancaster County) and a couple of glasses of Steen from S. Africa, though truth be told if I had known how hot these were I would have had a nice cold lager.
All the pepper heads out there need to try this one.
I note that the other reviewers did not experience the same heat as I did. I am quite tolerant of spicy heat and always order hot wings “hot” and have spicy Thai at the next to highest level. I guess your mileage may differ…
