Pepus Baby Sardines in Vegetable Oil 10/12

$7.50

When you buy the sardines under the Espinaler branding, you’re getting fish caught locally and processed fresh by master canners. When you buy the Pepus brand, it’s still the work of the same master canners, but the fish may (or may not) be caught locally and may (or may not) be processed from frozen. Many people can’t tell the difference, and love the savings.

A solid unflavored tin of sardines with a pleasantly medium-soft texture and above average moisture. The fillets didn’t fall apart very much considering their delicate flake, only really wanting to break in half (when using chopsticks). The vegetable oil is admittedly a bit of an afterthought here but that neutrality does allow this to be more versatile as part of a larger preparation. Salt levels were fine, flavors weren’t terribly complex but still enjoyable overall. I do rank the Pepus tin in spicy olive oil over this one but hey, you won’t regret trying this tin especially if you prefer unflavored sardines.
