Great tin with superb moisture and flake. It doesn’t get much better than this for smoked, unflavored mackerel fillets! Compares very favorably to the also-great Ocean’s smoked mackerel that has juniper and coriander as well. The packaging is beyond beautiful, the fish is clearly very high quality, and the inclusion of skin (facing the bottom of the tin) makes for a much better bite/chew than the competition. Seasoning was solid, perhaps a little light on salt when eaten straight from the tin but not enough to worry about. It’s definitely a premium product overall and I felt like I got my money’s worth, which is saying a lot at this price point. It’ll be hard to spend 2x the $ of Ocean’s to buy this again … but honestly, it’s impressive enough that I just might find myself doing so. Two thumbs way up especially for those real mackerel aficionados.

I actually didn’t care much for this tin. It’s not bad by any means, but just not my favorite mackerel and priced too high for me to order it again. I didn’t pick up much smoke flavor and overall just felt it was kinda bland. Texture is ok and it wasn’t overly fishy or anything. But for what it is, I’d have been just as happy with some basic KO mackerel at less than half the cost. After tasting it plain, I ate about half the tin with club crackers and hot pepper salt and the other half with some spicy stir fry noodles. In the tin’s defense, I think I’m quite picky about my tinned fish and I’m still learning about what I do/don’t like.

Three firm skinless fillets with good moisture and a clean flavor but I got little to no smokiness from this tin. Nothing to complain about really, but given the price and my personal tastes, I will stick with other options: From this producer, I prefer their smoked trout; for smoked mackerel, I much prefer Ramon Pena fillets or Jose Gourmet whole small.
