Portomar Small Sardines in Olive Oil 10/14

$8.00

Beautifully presented small sardines. While we think you can make a case that the Portuguese do the big sardines right, it’s going to be tough to convince us that the Spanish are the ones to beat when it comes to small sardines.

I loved this tin – I prefer small sardines and these hit the spot. Great taste from the fish, firm texture for such small guys, and you could get the crunch from the bones but it’s not overwhelming. They’re also fun to eat as I love it when they’re packed in an overlapping pattern. These are excellent fish, especially at this price point. Highly recommend trying these if you like small sardines

This was a very nice tin of small sardines. Received a total of 12 little fish beautifully packed in light-colored olive oil. They were firm enough to come out of the tin without falling apart but soft enough where I didn’t really detect eating the spines. Nice meaty texture and the seasoning was decent – perhaps a bit on the salty side for my palate but just a minor critique on an otherwise excellent tin. Price point is also good for this style of sardines, well recommended!

The flavor/quality of Yurritas but at a bargain price! It’s an absolutely brilliant tin and I’d pick this over most other Spanish sardines. Texture was a perfect medium all the way through, moisture was a notch above average and super consistent on every bite. Seasoning was spot on and I didn’t even contemplate adding any salt or sauce to this … it’s a tin that’s perfect for those of us who just really love the pure sardine experience. And at this price, wow. The more I think about it, the more I think that they really could hang with the Yurrita sardinillas and that’s a huge compliment. They’re a rebuy for sure.

I concur with the other reviews, as this tin brings great value when compared to other Spanish small sardines in this style. Protomar hits all the marks. The sardines were somewhat firm and meaty, certainly not dry. The olive oil had a decent texture, and this tin also has a good presentation.
Along with a reviewer above, my only critique with this tin is that it tasted quite salty, and I usually find the salt level in most tins to be a bit underwhelming. To those who are salt-adverse, I’d recommend thoroughly draining the tin and enjoying the sardines either in a dish or with crackers/bread.
