Fascinating, unique treat; a worthy splurge. Moister than most tuna, with a delicate but distinctive savor, & absolutely pristine. Raid your savings for a special occasion. Make these the centerpiece. I wouldn’t gussy them up much. Put some condiments on the side–lemon, a grind of black pepper–& maybe a handful of arugula with a splash of Katz’s agrodolce Sauvignon Blanc vinegar. Or choose fruit with a savory finish. Who needs dessert?

Sometimes you deserve a treat. And sometimes you ought to let your curiosity be satisfied. Yes, this is an expensive tin. Flawless diamonds are expensive; perfect things generally are. Today I’m able to say, as a result of opening this can, that I enjoyed a perfect lunch. Simple salad greens from my garden, splashes of olive oil from the tin and a good, aged balsamic vinegar, and these filets laid atop. Not a single thing I’d change, and the price seems right to me for this vintage offering.

This can just made for an amazing brunch straight from the tin. The fillets are moist and beautiful. The flavor has a depth that is difficult for me to describe, but words like “buttery” and “complex” come to mind (complex for tuna fillets that is). There are several layers to the flavor here. Really impressive. Perfectly seasoned as well, though I did have a few bites with a drop or two of Espinaler sauce to make things pop (highly recommended combo).

    Wow.

Admittedly, I’m not a big tuna aficionado. I eat a good bit of it, but I tend to get the cheap, water packed generic grocery store brands to use for tuna melts, salads, soups, etc. But I wanted to try a brand that was new to me and RTG’s ‘wow, wow, wow’ description convinced me to take a chance on it. Also, I had never heard of bullet tuna before.

Very unassuming packaging. It was just a printed piece of paper wrapped around the can and held in place with a rubber band as if someone had used an old xeroxed ‘zine for the wrapper. A very faint scent upon opening which exposed very neatly arranged fillet pieces. They looked like thinner fillets of mackerel with your standard apartment rental beige color that ones expects from tuna. They were difficult to get out of the can as they were tightly packed and I wish I had been patient enough to get them all out in nicer pieces. The texture was firm with a fantastic chew, but was still very moist. Texture of the oil was thin, but it did it’s job very well.

The taste is where these really stood out. Bold, meaty, almost pork like in flavor and well seasoned with salt. Seriously, these were delicious. I think this was the best tasting tin of tuna I have ever had. Honestly, it doesn’t need anything else. Don’t bother wasting these in a salad, just eat them as it. If you want to get fancy, arrange the pieces in a spiral or spoke pattern on a plate and pour the oil over top. If you want to up the appearance to reflect the price, perhaps a tiny bit of fresh parsley or orange zest. But honestly, I think the best way to eat this would be to take a deep breath to clear your mind, grab your favorite chopsticks and eat them slowly. Stare off into space and enjoy the texture and flavor. Definitely a special occasion tin. I suppose one could share them with a dear friend, but you will find yourself wishing you were more selfish halfway through.
