Sardinha Sardines in Spicy Olive Oil with Malagueta Pepper, Special Edition – Year of the Dragon

$8.50

The Malgueta pepper comes in at 60,000-100,000  on the Scoville Scale, putting it the same class as the Thai Bird’s Eye Pepper, which is to say hotter than cayenne, but not as hot as habanero. Year of the dragon brings a bit of fire!

Special edition?! Don’t mind if I do! The exact same great quality that you know and expect from Sardinha, but with a delicious bit of extra heat. I’d put these at spicy level of 2+ out of 5 – it’s slow accumulates enough to notice and really appreciate. Texture was the typical Sardinha medium-soft where it’s still barely possible to get a full sardine picked up with chopsticks. Absolutely no mush here but there is plenty of moisture. Added just a few salt flakes and enjoyed these at room temp straight out of the tin. I will absolutely love adding a tin of these on each order for as long as they’re offered. If you love Sardinha (or really any giant pilchard tins), these are a MUST.

In this tin I received three beautiful, shiny sardines and a pepper. This was my first experience with Sardinha, and I found that these sardines have a softer texture compared to other tins I’ve tried (Matiz, Nuri). There were a couple of scales, but not so many that the experience was ruined. Every bite came with a delicious dry heat from the pepper, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I’d recommend this tin if you prefer softer sardines and want something spicier than your standard tin.

Hmm, I’d forgotten the description of the peppers when I opened this tin for breakfast, and I’m surprised. I did not note any significant heat; seemed directly comparable to other spiced Spanish, Portuguese, and Moroccan tins. My can contained three very hefty fish crowded into the can, which constituted a hearty meal, but left little room for oil—I wonder if that detail made the difference in the spiciness? The fish were tasty—let me make that clear—with good firm flesh. I would’ve wished for fewer scales, but I realize that might be just this tin (and perhaps a function of the fishes’ hulking size).

I know it’s not a super big deal, but Sardinha’s packaging is delightful. I saved this Year of the Dragon wrapper for some TBD crafting project.

What an addictive spiciness!!! The Year of the Dragon was definitely a favorite of all the tins I tried. Though I ate these with rice, eggs, and green onion, I think it would be perfect in a spicy pasta with some cheese. A little spicier than other tins but not in a bad way!

Wow! This is a tin that actually delivers on the heat. It’s not overpowering by any means, but it finds you without having to seek it out. I enjoyed these straight out of the can and immediately noticed the heat- and I have larger than acceptable hot sauce collection. The sardines were meaty and moist, without being overly oily. I’m so glad I bought more than one of these!

This was a very nice spiced sardine tin! Popping the lid I was presented with a reddish olive oil and three large chonkers. After removing them from the tin I saw I had one large chili pepper at the bottom. Texture was soft enough to flake apart easily on my usual sourdough toast. Flavor was nice and meaty and the heat I would rate at a 2.5 out of five – more than a typical piri-piri tin but less than a Nuri extra spice tin. I drizzled some of that chili-infused oil over the sardines and it helped to keep the heat lingering on the palate after I was finished.
In conclusion this was an excellent product and really what all piri-piri tins should aspire to be!
