I don’t say this easily or lightly … these are very, VERY close to the Nuri spiced tomato tin (which is my favorite tomato’d sardine of all time). I am stunned at how close they are to that gold standard. Sardinha’s tomato was excellent – ideal thickness, not too sweet, definitely not tomato paste or ketchup. The spicy level was maybe even slightly more than the Nuri spiced, I’d perhaps put this tin at 2.5 out of 5? Had a biiiig ol’ pepper in the bottom of the tin. I did want just a tiny bit of extra salt as I ate this (at room temp) but I imagine most people won’t feel like it needs a thing.

The biggest difference here between Sardinha and Nuri was texture. If you’re put off by Nuri’s softy-soft tomato sardine texture but you still want that deeply flavored and spicy tomato sauce, look no further. The texture here was a 3 out of 5 medium and moisture hit 3 of 5 as well. It may not have soaked up as much sauce as Nuri but wow, I don’t care. I am impressed, Sardinha. Absolutely buy this if you even *remotely* think that you like sardines in tomato sauce.

I am new to the sardines game, but these were very tasty! This was my first experience with sardines in tomato sauce, so I don’t have a lot of pure comparisons to make. Compared to Nuri Spiced Sardines in Olive Oil these, were a little spicier, but still mild, slightly softer in texture to the Nuri’s and a little bit “fishier.”

I don’t think this will be in the regular rotation for me, but a very solid tin!

I really loved this tin! The tomato sauce had a nice balance between olive oil and tomatoes–not too oily, and not too thick/pasty. It penetrated the fish nicely, which I can’t say for every can of sardines with tomatoes, as some have a thick paste that separates from the fish and only coats the exteriors. The sardines themselves were large and plump with a forward fish flavor; I appreciated this, as I thought it complimented the acidity and sweetness from the tomato sauce nicely. Compared to Nuris, this is lacking the cloves and other spices (which I personally not miss) and is overall spicier in terms of heat (which appeals to me).

Overall, both the tomato sauce and the sardines were well above average, and I would not hesitate to get this tin again!

I will start my review by stating that Nuri Spiced Tomato is the absolute gold standard for what a sardines in tomato tin should be and that it’s a strong contender for my “desert island tin”. With that out of the way, Sardinha really brought their A Game with this product!
Popping the lid I was presented with three large chonkers in a beautifully red tomato sauce. The texture of the sauce was perfect also – not too runny nor pasty. The sardines themselves were pretty firm but still flaked nicely when I spread them over sourdough toast. The lack of clove and other spices really allowed the pepper to give enough heat to be rather noticeable. While not as complex as the Nuri spiced tomato, the Sardinha definitely is a wonderful change of pace. Will have to get this tin from time to time for a variety.

These sardines are nice and plump! I thought the sauce had a pleasant mild flavor and good consistency . At first I wasn’t tasting any spiciness, but felt a little tingle after finishing the second of the three sardines. I found a hot pepper in the corner while moving around the sauce with my bread. The sardines were firm and easily pulled out whole.
