Trata Sardines in Olive Oil

$5.00

At this price point expect quite a bit of size variation, and a little bit more crunch. But the Greek olive oil, oh my.

What a fantastic tin this turned out to be, especially at its price point! Cracking open I was presented with a more muted sardine/olive oil than what I was anticipating. Got a total of eight little sardines packed rather nicely in creamy looking olive oil. Had one by itself – the texture was darn near perfect, firm enough to stay in one piece but soft enough where it didn’t feel dry at all. The Unami flavor really came though and the seasoning was spot-on. Placed the rest in some crunchy sourdough toast and drizzled some of that fine Greek olive oil over it – what a splendid breakfast!
If you haven’t had the opportunity to try small to medium sized pilchards this would be the perfect tin to try out. Are Ramon Pena or Conservas De Cambados of higher quality? Well yes but you’re paying at least twice the price for them also! This is a tin that really hits above its weight class and deserves a spot in everyones pantry whenever they want to have the experience of eating small pilchards without paying a premium price.

Secretly awesome. Flavor was deep and great without needing any additional seasoning. Texture was a medium that’s just barely leaning on the side of firm but with moisture that was well above average. Each bite was crazy satisfying with a slightly-softer outside and slightly-firmer inside, a combination that I always love. I definitely didn’t expect this from such an unknown/inexpensive Trata tin but wow, this ranks right up with some of my favorite (and more $) plain sardines. Aaaaabsolutely recommend this one.

Small sardines with lots of tails, somehow the tin contained more tails than there were fish with the meat being softer on the outside and firmer near the center. Not a fishy taste but strong flavor in a good way sets these apart from cheaper alternatives though they do not look different from $3-4 tins of more mainstream sardines. Oil is middling, the skin is roughed up, not the prettiest but if you discount these simply for that fact you will miss out on these little guys taste.

Eight fish in this tin. Aroma was a little strong, but the fish were not. Firm, meaty and rich. From the price stand point these are a good value. So far I have been very pleased with the Greek products from RTG.
