Fangst Blåmusling No. 1, Limfjord Blue Mussels Marinated w/ Dill and Fennel Seeds

$12.00

Ranked #25 on the worldbestfish.com Overall list.

Limfjord blue mussels marinated with dill and fennel seeds.

In the cold water of the Danish inlet Limfjorden, ‘blåmuslinger’ (blue mussels) grow slow to acquire a particularly fine taste and texture. Most are then shipped off to foreign kitchens but some they keep. With a marinade of cold pressed rapeseed (canola) oil, apple vinegar, dill and fennel seeds, Fangst brings you their version of the blue mussel.

If you’re looking for the perfect bite straight out of the tin, you’ll find that here.

These are super nice! Great texture – slightly soft, easy to chew, consistent texture throughout – not mushy, not grainy, not rubbery – just a nice small meaty bite. They have a very pleasant, light vinegar / classic pickled flavor to them – just the right note, not intense, nothing that bites back, but a great light cider vinegar / dill note that accompanies the natural flavor and texture of the mussel perfectly.

Given the great flavor and texture, I think they’re great straight out of the tin, though dropping them onto something crispy or mixing them into some pasta or rice wouldn’t be wrong. The only note of caution I’d offer about this tin as that it might ruin other tinned mussels or shellfish for you – it’s that good. Order at least two tins of these lest you’ll be sad when the first one’s gone – I know from experience.

Thase are some fantastic mussels. I have had many other brands and these blow them all away. I tried them both straight out of the can and on a green leaf salad with figs and tomatoes topped with some of the oil from the can and a bit of nice balsamic, I couldn’t tell you which preparation was better.

I agree with the other commenter that you want to buy 2, I can’t recommend these enough. This is probably the best tin of fish that I have ever had.

Really, REALLY delicious and vinegar-forward. Clearly high quality. Lots of visible fennel seeds and beautifully seasoned. Needs no additional flavors at all, each mussel is a complete experience by itself that you don’t need to adjust in any way. I did eat half of it on almond/wheat crackers and of course, it was fantastic.

The brightness and acidity of this tin was a surprise to me. Hits you right away and immediately takes you to a different place than other mussels I’ve had (e.g. most recently, Patagonia lemon mussels in broth). Is that different place a markedly *better* place? No, I don’t think, it’s just a different one. These are so very different from Patagonia lemon (which are equally amazing) that it’s nearly impossible to compare. While you want to drink the leftover Patagonia liquid like soup, instead you want to use this leftover Fangst liquid on a salad.

Overall, it’s a 5 star tin. If you’ve had Fangst tins before, then you probably expect nothing less than this … and you’d be right. The price here seems fair for the quality that you’re getting and it’ll certainly be an occasional splurge item for me in the future.

Prior to this, I’d only ever had smoked mussels in a can, usually stuffed in a stocking at xmas as a gift from my dad. Sadly, they were never any good so my opinions of canned mussels has always been tainted.

Fast forward to my first order at RTG – and these are now quite possibly my favorite snack of all time. These are so jam packed with flavor and have a fresh taste. The texture is amazing – not mushy or rubbery. And I especially loved the fennel seeds. I ate it with arugula and cheese and to cap it off – I even drank the juice at the end! Which isn’t something I was expecting to do, but every bit of it was so exceptional! Don’t even hesitate for one second to buy these.

Long story short – some of the best mussels I’ve ever had, period. This was my first Fangst product and I was incredibly impressed. Overall, very flavorful. I found that the dill and fennel complemented the flavors perfectly, while not being too overpowering. I enjoyed several of them on their own, straight out of the tin, but was also delicious when accompanied with fresh bread.

    ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Great quality, as expected from anything Fangst. You will be able to smell the fennel and dill the second you crack open the tin. You can also smell the vinegar, which was a pleasant surprise to me (if you know what you bought, then this won’t be a surprise). The vinegar, oil, and dill/fennel make for a pretty amazing sauce. Predictably, they are quite firm due to the vinegar, but not unpleasantly so. The mussels are moist and flavorful. I like that these are quite a bit different than most of the tinned mussels I’ve tried. It’s hard to compare them to anything as both their quality and flavor have them in a class of their own. My only regret is that I didn’t use the tin for a full dinner dish. I ate these for lunch on some high quality thin crackers and it was fantastically indulgent. Didn’t think once about adding additional sauces or seasonings. Even if I could afford it, I don’t think I’d eat these every day. But as a treat, I think these are just about perfect.

I’ve seen a lot of comments on Fangst products in general, and these mussels in particular, all of them good. These are absolutely spectacular. Very different than the usual mussels in escabeche. (So many of them are, it’s almost hard to find something outside of that realm.) They are small, so be sure to dig the last one out of the corner. Will buy again, no doubt.

    4.5⭐️/5⭐️
First time trying something from Fangst and this was an excellent introduction. Nice pickle-y flavor as well as dill and fennel notes. If you’re at all concerned about the fennel/anise flavor being overpowering, fear not—I feel like I’m fairly sensitive to that flavor and I’m not a fan, but it wasn’t too much at all. It was also nice to try mussels that aren’t in escabeche. Highly recommend to anyone wanting to try tinned mussels.

These are very good, and quite different from other tinned mussels I’ve had. The mussels in the tin I had were significantly smaller than in the picture above, so there must be some variation. The vinegar is prominent. Tangy, sweet, briny, w/ anise notes- yum. I didn’t like these more than the Patagonia mussels (or trader joe smoked mussels for that matter which are suprisingly good) so I probably won’t have them as a pantry mainstay due to the price, but it’s great to have the variety of options!

Fangst does it again with this tin of mussels. Because of the size of the Mussels, I would recommend them in a salad. The flavor is lovely. I will be buying this again.

This was an enjoyable tin for me that I’d rate 5 out of 5. I devoured this with some roasted potatoes and arugula salad. A few things stood out for me from this tin: 1) the mussels were smaller than what I expected which made it easy to enjoy the little morsels on its own, 2) there was a subtle flavor of the mussels that had a hint of the crisp/tangy + licorice flavor imparted from the apple cider vinegar and fennel/dill seed and rapeseed oil sauce, and a 3) firm yet delicate and not gritty texture of the mussels.

  12. Sandra Dixon (verified owner)

These are very vinegar-forward, so if that’s your thing, you’ll like these. It was an acquired taste for me, but definitely unique with the dill and fennel. It’s a refreshing change from the more classic smoked tins.

A delicious tin of mussels! The texture is not at all off-putting, these guys are super enjoyable to eat. The flavor is so balanced and tasty. I also really like that I can personally get two meals out of this tin. Absolutely recommend to anyone who wants to try mussels!

  14. Sarah (verified owner)

Probably the best tinned mussels I have had. I loved the flavor- subtle, neither the dill or fennel are very strong, but it just works. Taste is clear and crisp, matching the perfect presentation. Worth the splurge.

4.5/5 — pretty damn fantastic. Mussels are quite delicate and small, with a not overly chewy texture. The flavor in the liquid is perfection – these can and should be eaten out of the tin, paired with nothing more than a carb delivery mechanism, if anything at all. The fennel comes through boldy and brilliantly and perfectly complements the light natural flavor of the mussels, while the dill is more subtle and rounds out the experience. Will definitely be ordering these again!

These mussels are to die for and one of my favorite Fangst tins! The vinegar flavor/aroma is very present in these, with subtler notes from the herbs (though the fennel is more noticeable). The mussels have a great texture and flavor and taste really clean and fresh, no gritty/sandy bits. I preferred the texture of these compared to other tinned mussels because they’re soft while still maintaining their texture and chew! Pairs perfectly with a bag of potato chips and is a 5 star appetizer every time!

Aha! Yes indeed, these are truly wonderful: small yet meaty, beautifully flavored, strikingly fresh-tasting. They need absolutely nothing added. Lovely (& quite filling) straight from the tin; equally tasty atop the greens of your choice. Or the breadstuff of choice, Or the greens atop the bread…never mind, just order ’em & eat ’em. And purr.

I’m here because of daywithmei, and for this tin I followed her suggestion of adding these to a radish, green apple, and dill salad with the marinade as the dressing (she included fennel but I’m not a fan so I left that out!). HOLY SMOKES IT WAS GOOD. I note that I’m not a fan of fennel because, like someone else mentioned here, the anise/fennel flavor is super subtle in this tin, not pronounced enough to bother me. The mussels on their own are a fresh-tasting delight, like fridge pickles you just made an hour ago or quick-pickled veggies. They weren’t grainy at all, and the texture was a perfect meaty bite with the flavor of the mussel only complemented/not overwhelmed by the marinade. I am indeed sad that I didn’t buy two tins, and excited to try all the Fangst now.

Mussels are conflicting for me, tasty but the texture gives me pause. These are nice – the size meant a good balance between the tasty soft bits and the more chewy textured parts. The meaty balance was great and the subtle herb flavorings with dill and fennel were also well matched, One of the few tins period I enjoyed alone without bread/etc…

Fangst never fails to impress me. These mussels were really great – the pieces are small, but they pack a big punch of flavor. They are honestly very pickle-like with the flavoring and saltiness, and were great both on their own as a quick snack and paired with cheese and crackers.

  21. mo (verified owner)

These were delightful. The dill and fennel seeds added a sort of refreshing flavor to the mussels. My husband and I ate these with shredded carrots as recommended by Fangst and we really enjoyed the pairing. I did find the mussels a tad bit tough but not to the point of being unpleasant.

  22. Mike Turpie (verified owner)

There are many small mussels in this tin. I had these on homemade rye crisps. While these are not quite as perfectly cooked as Ramon Peña silver line mussels, they more than make up for this in flavor. I think this comes both from the quality of the mussels themselves and the amazing seasonings in the tin. Absolutely delicious. Don’t miss this tin if you care for Scandinavian seasonings.

  23. marshallprather (verified owner)

These tinned mussels were smaller than others I’ve tried, but had a firm, consistent texture that was easy to enjoy. Their light vinegar and dill flavor was pleasant and didn’t overpower the natural taste of the mussels. I had them straight from the tin with some potato chips, and they made for a surprisingly tasty and satisfying snack
