Simply wonderful!
Texture of the cold fish is something that takes getting used to but warmed up in a water bath it turns into a velvety, umami flavour bomb! Served over rice with some kimchi it will truly become one of your favourite meals.

This was my first time trying Saury and I’m glad I did.
Some people have said this fish is like a cross between sardines and mackerel. There’s something to be said for that. It’s a very firm fish, and though there’s mostly dark meat, it’s not in any way fishy or mushy.
The tin contained a number of filets strips, all firmly packed so the contents came out in one mass which easily broke apart.
The accompanying brown sauce is pleasant, delicate, lightly sweet, but overall fairly tame in flavor (and there’s not a lot of it). So, I emptied the contents of the tin in a pan with a few shakes of soy sauce, a couple healthy spoonfuls of Lao Gan Ma Spicy Chili Crisp and some freshly ground Sichuan Green Peppercorns (be careful with this spice as it can give off an intense numbing sensation), and lightly heated these ingredients. I served it over white rice and scallions and it made a delicious meal for two.
Definitely ordering more of these.

This tin, like most of the Japanese deenz are amazing to pair with a warm bowl of rice! perfect for a quick lunch or even breakfest!
Saury tends to be a bit different texturally than your typical sardines or even mackerel, but it is differently worth trying!

If you’ve had something like old fisherman eels, then you know what type of flavor profiles you’re coming in for here. These are pretty tasty, with a definite firm meat and sweet sauce accompaniment. Worth trying, especially as an addition to warm rice like others have said!

This was my first tin of fish EVER, and I still have yet to top it especially given the wonderful price point. The saury was beautifully packaged, whole filets that have a tender bite and buttery mouthfeel. The broiled aspect added a whole other dimension to the umami aspect of this tin without being overpowering. The sauce was a sweet and salty combination of soy sauce and sugars that married very well without being too thin or thick to enjoy by itself or over rice. Definitely becoming a pantry staple in this house!
