The terms “spiced” and “spicy” are used pretty much interchangeably in the tinned fish world, to mean two different things: with a hot pepper (or hot pepper flavor), and with cloves/bay/carrot/hot pepper. There are many examples of both terms being used to mean both things.
We are so frustrated by how widespread this confusing inconsistent usage is that we’ve gone through our entire product line to correct the incorrect ones such that our description of “spiced” or “spicy” will always indicate which it really is, regardless of the packaging. “Spicy” = with hot pepper flavor. “Spiced” = with the cloves/bay/carrot/hot pepper flavors.
This tin doesn’t say spiced or spicy, but by looking at ingredients, we can see it belongs in spiced.

Impressive and unique! It’s almost a spiced / spicy hybrid tin and has a TON of little pepper bits almost to the amount that you get in a Ferrigno artwork tin. Spicy level is a solid 2 out of 5 for me that’s enough heat to notice, plus the little bit of a spiced profile (aka flavor depth) makes this stand out. I really enjoyed the overall flavor depth of this tin at room temp and didn’t feel like I needed to add salt/anything to it.
Texturally, the sardines were consistent all the way through and weren’t quite as flaky as I expected. They were admittedly a *little* dry but not too far down that path, nothing that a nice distribution of the pepper bits couldn’t cover up. It’s a more expensive tin for sure, but there was enough uniqueness to this tin that it felt like it was worth an occasional splurge … I’ll be happy to add this back into my orders every once in a while.

Very good dines! Very similar to Nuri spiced but a premium price and a level hotter.
If Nuri didn’t exist I’d likely buy these more, but considering how similar the flavour profile is I doubt I’ll be a repeat buyer.
4 very nice looking sardines in a dark tasty oil. Very nice texture and chew and as mentioned, actually a little bit of heat comes through.
I tossed mine on some seeded mini toasts with a very light kewpie mayo spread, a little chili crisp, sprouts and a few slices of pickled onion.
Very good, but will stick to Nuri spiced for my go to spiced dine!
