Despite the low price point, these are absolutely fabulous. Not whole fillets, but just great nonetheless. The oil is also sublime. Sadly, can’t get them at my local Whole Paycheck, though I’ll load up when I can.

It’s a true unicorn in the mackerel world – less expensive than almost all others yet also more delicious than the competition. For $3, this tin shouldn’t be this ridiculously moist, flavorful without being too fishy, flaky without falling apart, and perfectly seasoned … but here we are, King Oscar has done it. I didn’t need to add a single flake of salt, not a drop of lemon, nothing at all in order to enjoy this straight from the tin at room temp.
Hot take: KO mackerel should replace regular canned tuna in EVERY single recipe/preparation in the world. It is *exactly* what I’ve always hoped that canned tuna could be. I’ll probably never have mackerel as a daily driver, but honestly, the KO Mediterranean mackerel and this tin comes *really* close to it. It’s very, very good.

King Oscar Mackerel filets win out for me over other comparable cans at comparable prices every time because they’re just so tender & succulent. Great fish in a very, very neutral olive oil. I prefer the KO Jalapeno Mack filets, but overall, this is a great tin at a great price.

What a bargain these are! The tin is absolutely packed with meaty mackerel, with just enough oil to keep it moist, not mushy. Traded up on a standard salade nicoise with this replacing tuna: very tasty indeed. They stand up to bitter greens & sharp mustard but are fine straight from the tin. These go on my How to Do (Up) Austerity shopping list, alongside the KO cross-pack sardines.
