The terms “spiced” and “spicy” are used pretty much interchangeably in the tinned fish world, to mean two different things: with a hot pepper (or hot pepper flavor), and with cloves/bay/carrot/hot pepper. There are many examples of both terms being used to mean both things.
We are so frustrated by how widespread this confusing inconsistent usage is that we’ve gone through our entire product line to correct the incorrect ones such that our description of “spiced” or “spicy” will always indicate which it really is, regardless of the packaging. “Spicy” = with hot pepper flavor. “Spiced” = with the cloves/bay/carrot/hot pepper flavors.

Very meaty fillets, not as dry as the Nuri spiced whole mackerel but a bit fishier. These were eaten straight out of the tin, but I bet these would be amazing mixed with some red onion, a little kewpie mayo and some fresh herbs!

As always, Nuri seems to be a stiff tin to open as I popped it open to very little scent. This could be an office friendly tin. There were four whole fillets, tightly packed, and it was a bit tough to get the first one out, but they held together nicely. The inside of the fillets still had the ghost tracks of the spines and rib bones which would look nice if you wanted to make a spiffy looking plate. The oil had a nice auburn hued oil and had the usual suspected aromatics, carrot, pickle, chile, clove, peppercorn, & laurel. I was a bit worried with how well they stayed together that they would be bone dry. Fortunately, while the texture was quite firm, they had a good amount of moisture from the oil. Their flavor was well seasoned, and the spice blend really comes through with the mackerel being milder than sardines. There was even a hint of heat that lingered and as expected, the oil was great. You don’t have to slurp it down until it drips from you chin like I did, but don’t waste it.

This is one of my favorite tins I’ve tried in a while. The fish is beautiful, firm without being dry and breaks down into nice flakes. The spices come through and I polished off the whole tin way too quickly on bread and butter with quick pickled red onion and celery. Will absolutely be repurchasing multiples to keep this on hand.

These were delicious on a buttered English muffin with some kewpie mayonnaise and some green onions. If you’re familiar with the spiced Nuri sardine flavor profile, as I am, these will feel right at home. The fillets have the typical mackerel fishiness (not a bad thing!) and firmness that make them good to make a meal out of rather than eat straight out of the can.

Everything you already love about Nuri spiced oil, only with mackerel. Flavor-wise, this is brilliant. Spectacular spice with a cucumber and carrot slice too. The mackerel is firm and doesn’t absorb the oil in quite the same way as sardines, so you don’t get softened texture all the way through. Found myself wanting just a little bit more moisture in each bite, but honestly, this is still above average moisture compared to other mackerel I’ve had. Clearly high quality overall. While I might give Angelo Parodi’s ginger and chili pepper mackerel the slight edge over this tin, it’s still quite delicious and absolutely worth trying.

These were my first experience with tinned mackerel and what a pleasant surprise. The filets look beautiful in the spicy golden oil and the flesh was so wonderfully firm. I could see them being a little dry if you drained off the oil but doing so would be unforgiveable! This uses the same spice mixture as Nuri’s sardines but the flavors present somewhat differently with the mackerel, the clove being especially noticeable here. I bet these would be great on a sandwich. I’ll definitely keep a few of these tins around for when I’m not in a sardine mood!

Spiced, spicy and meaty, these mfs are jam packed with flavor! Even the tin itself was stuffed to the brim! The fish is tender and relatively moist throughout the tin. Excellent level of spiciness (trying to adhere to the spice vs spicy terminology guidelines). There’s almost a little sweetness inherent to the meat as well. Admittedly I think the flavor of the olive oil itself is overshadowed by the spice seasoning which comes down more to personal preference than anything. Ultimately a very tasty jawn.

These are amazing!! I’m pretty new to tinned fish and the first tin I had was the Angelo Perodi mackerel, which made me realize I really liked tinned mackerel. This made me realize I LOVE tinned mackerel. The fillets weren’t dry at all, are very meaty and tender, and are infused with a beautiful spiced oil. They definitely aren’t spicy, but they have a beautiful flavor from the added spices. I ate them with garlic herb pita chips, Kerrygold butter, & hot sauce and I sopped up the leftover oil in the tin with some bread and it was truly delicious. I highly highly recommend these to anyone!

Personally I am not the biggest fan of mackerel by itself but I really enjoyed these on top of some toast with whipped cream cheese and some of the oil + the pepper insides dropped onto it. I ate 3 of the fillets like that and the 4th one I had on top of Dill flavored crackers with some Salsa Espinaler. The pieces were firm and I like how they held together when I put them on the toast, the butteriness of the mackerel with Nuri’s spices really made eating it with some cream cheese and crunchy toast the absolute perfect combination of textures and tastes. Nuri makes pretty mackerel, I love how pretty they were displayed in the tin.

I never had mackerel before and was a bit unsure whether or not I’m gonna like it. The fillets are very flavorful and meaty, on their own a bit too much for me but combined with some crunchy toasted bread and cream cheese it was fantastic!
I actually ended up putting them in a grilled cheese sandwich, this might be a crime to some but for me, it was an absolute win.

This was a really nice tin of mackerel fillets. Cracking the tin I was presented with a mild version of that classic Nuri spice essence, it was muted enough to have as an office tin. Three large meaty fillets greeted me and were beautifully packed. The flavor is what I’ve come to expect from the Nuri spiced offerings – it complemented the fillets quite nicely. Only nitpick is that it seemed like that the flavor didn’t penetrate the fillet completely.
All in all, a very nice tin if you like boneless mackerel – I still give the edge to the AP chili-ginger mackerel however.

This has been my favorite tin in my tinned fish adventure to date. I love the balance of the spices, it’s warm and inviting. Beautifully packaged, handled with care. I had 4 smaller filets in my tin. The texture was tender and not at all dry. This will be a go-to tin for me, I already added it to the cart of my next order.

Classic Nuri spice flavor with the firmer texture of mackerel. I really enjoyed these! I smashed these up and had them on crackers. I also tried seasoning one of the fillets like a tuna salad with mayo etc and it was very refreshing vs the tuna salads I’m used to. They were a little dry without breaking them up a bit, so I’d recommend a little smashing!

Very meaty and firm. Not as fishy tasting or smelling as other mackerel I’ve had, I’d imagine them being skinless has a lot to do with that. Same great olive oil and small inclusions as other Nuri products, you really can’t go wrong. These are super easy to eat straight from the tin, they’re dense little fillets.

Wow, I loved these. I haven’t worked my way to trying their spiced sardines yet, so this was my first taste of that sort of flavor.
I enjoyed them straight out of the can. Great texture on the meat. Dense fillets drenched in the spiced oil mixture. The oil itself has a touch of spice with a slight sweet flavor for me. Delicious balance and it’s still hanging out on my taste buds as I type this review.
Loved the little veggie pieces in the tin with the fish too. Everything about this tin blew me away.

Another winner from Nuri! The best mackerel I’ve tried yet. I enjoyed the spiced flavor, but it’s not spicy if you’re looking for heat. Great texture – meaty and moist. I ate some straight out of the tin and some on saltines. Both were great! I may not order it often because it’s on the pricey side, but when I want to highlight mackerel, this will be my go to.
