These are not the salt-cured anchovies you may be used to, these are the same type of fish but processed more like the way sardines are typically processed, tinned in olive oil.

Wow these are surprisingly beefy! Very pretty, sizeable, clean fish that look and smell great upon cracking the can. The garlic adds richness to the oil, which can definitely be utilized well in recipes. Even has that slight raw garlic bite. I love to see that the ingredients used are organic. It is probably a contributing factor to the price, but I think Patagonia gets some brownie points for that. The biggest downside is they’re on the dry side.

Pretty good overall. Fish was obviously of high quality as was the oil. Impressed by the amount of garlic pieces in the tin, it added quite a bit of flavor without being overpowering. The fish were all very firm and *bordering* on dry but not necessarily in a bad way. As someone who hasn’t eaten many anchovies other than salt-cured, I expected them to have a more unique taste to differentiate them from other small fish … but in a blind taste test, I’d probably guess these were sardines instead.

At this price point, they will be an occasional buy for me as a change-of-pace tin but not a regular on my shelves. With that said, the flavor/quality of the tin in general will certainly make me try other Patagonia options.

These come with the instruction on the side of the box and on a little slip of paper to dump them onto a plate to get all the little bits of seasoning. Good advice. There were seven fish all glistening and firm tucked into the oil and garlic. The garlic was more of hint than strong to me. I had not ever tried white anchovies before and these do remind me of sardines. They were fresh smelling and tasty with plain saltine crackers. I thought the fish was high quality with no broken fish or scales or anything that took away from their clean flavor. I would eat these again, but I am still searching for a stronger flavor from the oils that are seasoned.

These were incredible. The texture was meaty, the flavor immaculate, both for the fish itself and the oil. I ate it over rice with arugula, room temperature. The strong umami from the fish and garlic make it taste almost parmesany. Not a particularly strong flavor, but a versatile addition to any board or bowl.

Opened the tin to find lots of gorgeous meaty little anchovies waiting for me. As per the instructions I poured the tin onto a plate to get all the garlic’y morsels onto the plate. Meat was firm and not too fishy, kind of reminded me of small whole mackerels in a way. These were super tasty and could definitely see myself ordering this tin again!

These were AMAZING! Will order every chance I get. I’d never tried anchovies before and these were a pleasant first endeavor. Very firm, plump, and full of sweet garlic flavor. The oil was rich too. I was FULL after half a tin. Do yourself a favor with this one.

Outstanding. I dumped these out onto a plate and had them on water crackers but wish I had used bread to sop up the garlic oil. I dabbed some Melinda’s ghost pepper sauce onto a couple, but it wasn’t necessary. They have great flavor as is. I think these are a 9/10. I’d never had anchovies in oil, only the little, salty pizza topping anchovies. I loved these.

These are a fan favorite for good reason – what a beautifully balanced tin of fish. The anchovies are neither too mushy nor too dry, the garlic is flavorful without overpowering, and the oil is mild but savory. I mixed into some stir-fried cabbage with fried shrimp, and it made a very satisfying meal. All in all, it’s a safe bet for novices and advanced tin lovers alike.

BLOWN AWAY! I never thought I’d enjoy anchovies as much as I did this can. The firmness was perfect, and the flavor was amazing. I rarely finish a can of fish and think “I could eat another can of that right now” but this can did that. I should have bought more, and I will buy more!

All in all 9/10! I will buy so many more cans of these anchovies.

These were incredible in sandwiches with some avocado and cucumber. They had a wonderfully meaty texture with a very balanced garlic flavor and would work well in so many different preparations. I’ll absolutely repurchase to try out more dishes!

This tin was really something special; I’ve never had any kind of anchovies before besides the small flat salt-cured fillets that I use as a pizza topping or mixed into pasta sauces, or sometimes as a topping for spinach/cheese ravioli with oil/butter sauce. The latter is exactly how I decided to try this tin after opening it and having a little taste. Emptied the whole tin into a pan with a tiny bit of fresh basil from my garden and warmed while cooking spinach/cheese ravioli, then poured it all over top the ravioli. Garnished with more fresh basil from the garden. No other sauce or anything; the oil from the tin was already a perfect sauce. Conveniently, the tin includes the oil in its nutrition info, so that made logging the meal very simple (although it would be annoying if I had drained the oil, but this isn’t a tin you open if you want to drain the oil imo).

I enjoyed the meal very much; definitely one of the better tinned fish meals I’ve had lately and one of the most enjoyable meals I’ve put together in general recently. The fish were saltier than other tinned fish I normally have, but also less salty than the little anchovy fillet salt bombs I’m used to. There was a good amount of roasted garlic in the tin which was nice; not like those other tins where there’s just one puny little slice hanging out in the corner. Also I will not that I tried the Patagonia mackerel with roasted garlic recently and didn’t find it nearly as exciting, so was very happy the white anchovies turned out to be quite a different story as I’d been hesitant to try them after the mackerel. Maybe that means I just like anchovies better than mackerel? All I know is that I really liked this tin and it’s on my list to try again at some point. Decent price too.

I give this tin a 4 out of 5. For comparison purposes, I’ve also had the Patagonia Lemon Olive and Don Olasagasti Basque anchovies. I think the preference between Patagonia Garlic vs Patagonia Lemon Oil vs Don Olasagasti anchovies are all a matter of personal taste. You can’t go wrong with any of these.

What you get with this Patagonia offering is a tin tightly packed with anchovies and bathed in a garlic oil concoction. The garlic presence is evident from the lovely garlic aroma that hits you upon opening the can, to seeing the garlic pieces in the oil. From a texture and flavor standpoint, these fish are on the firmer and slightly dry texture. What surprised me the most was the garlic flavor didn’t quite permeate the fish as say the Olasagasti tin does. For me, I knocked down just a star based on flavor preference — for a tin that smells of garlic, has garlic cloves in the oil… I was expecting/wanting a bit more garlic taste in each bite.

I dumped the contents of the tin onto a plate as per the suggestion included with my order. Each fish has pretty scales, is just on the right side of firm with a mild and not overpowering garlic flavor. The spine and bones are pleasantly soft yet slightly stronger than sardine bones I have experienced. Not overly salty and the fish themselves are not so large they become dry when take a bite of the whole fish without breaking it apart.

As someone who does not love the typical salt-cured anchovies, these were a refreshing departure into the “sardine-style” anchovy category. They are similar to sprats but a little saltier and more flavorful, without being overly salty. The garlic flavor is balanced, but I am someone who absolutely loves garlic, so maybe take that with a grain of salt.

I had these with goat cheese and cucumbers on crusty bread and they were fantastic. I would pair these with mild flavors and/or a little acid or spice – they do not need anything that would add additional salt.

Outstanding tin of anchovy. On my last order I selected the “fill my box” option and left it up to Dan, he didn’t disappoint.

Very nice and high quality fish, excellent chew to them. The salt level is perfect, its on the light side but compliments the garlic well. These are a fish I could eat every day and in my spreadsheet are some of the highest ranking.

I popped open the tin, drained the oil into a skillet and used this to fry up a couple slices of sourdough. Topped the bread with jarred tomato bruschetta topping, then the fish and garlic from the tin, and finally juice and zest from a lemon. Absolutely delicious. The garlic is somewhat subtle. The fish are firm, with good flavor and aroma (not too fishy). These are on the lighter end of properly salted for me, which I think is perfect if you are preparing with other ingredients. I prefer to use white anchovies in salads or other simple recipes like I did here, and these are my favorite so far. Looking forward to trying the other flavors.

I have had bad luck with anchovies previously, although I’ve been trying to find a tin I like. This is one of those tins!

The garlic flavor is noticeable, which was nice as it required less seasoning. I mixed it into a pasta dish alongside cheese, olive oil, and citrus salt. The anchovies complemented the flavors well! They made the dish more balanced. If I’d had a lemon on hand, a squeeze of lemon juice could have helped cut through the slight saltiness, but that’s on me for adding salty fish to a salted dish.

Overall, I really enjoyed these and will be ordering again to try and see how they pair with a salad.

These anchovies from Patagonia Provisions are one of my go-to recommendations whenever someone I know wants to dip their toes into the world of tinned fish. The presentation is 10/10 and the flavor is garlicky as advertised, the flavor is a lot more balanced than salt-heavy anchovies (these are not too salty) and they have a nice soft chew and texture to them. I wouldn’t say that these are my pantry staple anchovies but when I want a nice treat, these are a must-have for me. Just genuinely a great tin of fish from a really solid brand that I am more than happy to support!

  19. Florence Silver (verified owner)

Very meaty, and a tad bit on the dryer side (since there’s less fat than sardines) There was great garlic flavor and aroma to these, and plenty of little pieces of garlic at the bottom of the tin. Would likely go amazing over some pasta with salt, herbs, and some freshly grated cheese!

Didn’t know anchovies could be this big. Great flavor, mild and tasty. Made a sandwich from this — sourdough bread, mayo, hot sauce (Crystal), and some salad greens. Recommended.

  21. Christian Bromley (verified owner)

I’ve never tried anchovies before, so I didn’t know what to expect going into this tin. I found the anchovies to be firm and put together. Though drier than sardines, I wouldn’t say that the fish themselves are dry. They also have an inviting and mild flavor, with nothing off-putting detectable. I did find the tin to be quite salty, compared to what I’ve experienced with sardines.
In my opinion, the real winner in this tin is the oil, which absorbs a good amount of flavor and aroma from the garlic. I sopped it up with some warm bread, but it would also be excellent atop a salad.

Beautiful whole anchovies swimming in a rich, golden, garlicky oil. I eat tinned fish frequently enough that I don’t save the oil unless I have a specific recipe need coming up, but this is oil worth saving. The flavor was very robust and it needs something to cut it–normally I eat tinned fish over white rice without the need for toppings/extras but this was a little too rich that way. In the future I will eat it with tomatoes, onions, and/or lemon juice. This time, I didn’t have tomatoes or lemon but I DID have on hand a can of Paliria Greek Gigantes Beans in a onion tomato sauce (available on RTG too) and the combination was simply amazing. I highly recommended eating the two together, warmed up, over white rice.

These were really good. 9/10. One point deduction because they were a tad salty, but the garlic more than made up for it. They’re firmer than the sardines I’ve had as well. A new fish to dine on and enjoy.

  24. Cody Edwards (verified owner)

These were really tasty. Great balance of flavor, pleasant saltiness, and moist (especially for an anchovy). I think these might be the best anchovies I’ve tried, although I hadn’t eaten all day so that probably factors in.

  25. Brendan Plesha (verified owner)

These were great for a quick and delicious lunch. I honestly had not been too familiar with tinned fish with this being part of my first order, but these have been my favorite so far. Definitely on the saltier side, but I love a really salty snack so it was perfect for me. And with a couple of bagel chips on the side it was a perfect match!

  26. Tustin Barrile (verified owner)

Great fish very flavorful and also quite salty. Pairs well with pita crackers. One of my favorite cans yet. Not an anchovy lover but this was a very different experience from what I had tried before.

  27. Robert Brown (verified owner)

Wow, lovely meaty anchovy. Texture was spot on. The garlic flavor is there, not too subtle, but not overpowering. Will have to try the other white anchovies.
