Matiz Small Sardines with Sweet Piquillo Peppers

$6.50

The sweet piquillo pepper is a mainstay of dishes made with Spanish seafood. Some people keep a jar of piquillo peppers on hand to go along with their sardines, and some people prefer to have the piquillo peppers delivered along with the sardines. We don’t judge.

These small sardines are great! They actually seem to be on the bigger end of small which I think is a really nice sweet spot. Speaking of sweet, the piquillo peppers add just a hint of sweetness that is very refreshing. It truly is faint. Not that it is advertised as such, but there is no heat to them whatsoever. Texturally they are firm and moist, with sizeable tails intact that melt in your mouth. It was fun to top each bite with some of the small pieces of pepper at the bottom of the can. I just wish there had been a little bit more of a presence from the pepper so as to keep the fish the star of the show, but still set it apart from its peers.

Wow, I’m definitely adding these deens to my new favorites. These were phenomenal, and the taste of the piquillo peppers flavored the sardines and oil quite nicely, I know other reviewers say they didn’t notice the peppers but I did, there was no spiciness in the tin but the flavor was exceptional nonetheless. These were just wow, I scarfed them down rather quickly and I enjoyed how meaty they were. I will definitely get these again.

These are not spicy in any way. The piquillo pepper adds a very mild fruity essence with a hint of bitterness that compliments the sardines and oil very well. The individual fish are small as advertised, very tender, and very well handled. A tin of these could either be in easy reach or for something a bit more special.

I got about 5-7 sardines with a few piquilla peppers in the tin. The sardines were firm and had a nice flavor to them, but I got no heat in mine just a mild sweet flavor from the peppers with a nice aftertaste. I served them on top of some noodles and found that it was an enjoyable meal.

These small sardines are a great beginner friendly option to introduce to people who are new to or hesitant about trying tinned fish! The sardines have a nice, firm texture and pair very nicely with the piquillo peppers, which add a nice sweetness. These are so delicious on their own that my beginner friend actually preferred to eat these straight out of the tin without any accompaniments.

These small sardines were soft and juicy with a great flavor to eat alone or paired with something else. My tin had the peppers at the bottom, so I would let these sit upside down a little before serving to make sure that the flavor is distributed.
