Ortiz Sardinas a la Antigua “Old Style” Sardines in Olive Oil, tin

$9.00

Ortiz preserves the Sardina pilchardus, the “true sardine”using traditional methods: cleaned by hand, one by one, then fried in olive oil. The flavor of preserved sardines improves over time, becoming more tender and delicate (if you plan to keep sardines for years, we recommend flipping the cans semi-annually).

This was the can I was most excited to try in my most recent order. Seeing that they were fried in olive oil sounded so interesting. I expected something a little crispy but instead they turned out to be one of the most texturally pleasing ‘dines I’ve had. They’re moist and clean and salty and plump. For a “no frills” pilchard, this can could potentially be the gold standard.

Biggest sardine fillets EVER. It’s nearly a 5oz can and mine had 3 (!) sardines in it. Makes other supposedly-large sardines like Matiz look like tiny guppies. Ok, so they’re huge … but are they any good? Yeah! They actually are. Medium-soft texture that successfully stops short of mushy, extremely moist all the way through, and I didn’t notice any scales. Skin was shimmery white upon opening, flavor was mild but present, salt levels were good.

I enjoyed the first sardine plain and straight from the tin but then decided to try some Tabasco & Espinaler sauce for fun. While the Tabasco sauce provided no real upgrade, the Espinaler sauce brought a very welcome hit of acidity that bumped up the experience by a half star. I’d recommend a vinegar-based hot sauce for sure if you’re into that sort of thing.

Is it a rebuy? Yeah, I can see myself getting this tin on an every-other-order basis in the future. While I generally prefer small & smoked sprats, these really hit the mark for a high quality, consistent and meaty sardine lunch. If you’re the type of person who likes to make a sardine sandwich with massive pilchards, this is a top shelf choice. Recommended.

Love the can design, it’s sleek and traditional!

Was surprised how much room they had inside the tin. The filets were massive, with three spaciously placed. The skin was a very wrinkled silver.

Quite tasty, the skin has a subtle crispness. Plumo flesh and non-detectable bones. Great meaty chew! The only downside I’ve found is they can be a bit mushy. Overall they are okay, not too shabby: 3.5 out of 5.

I really enjoyed these dines. I kept it simple and put one on a piece of buttered bread with a little espinaler sauce and the combo was pretty darn good with a beer. I usually prefer a smaller dine but honestly, I enjoyed the size and texture of this one.

All in all, I give it a 7/10. I’d buy it again.

This is one of my favorite tins. The fish themselves are quite large with good flavor. The olive oil they’re packed in is also very pleasant with a somewhat strong flavor. They’re always packed beautifully. For me, they’re a nice treat. I like to eat them directly from the can over the sink.

This is my first time trying a fried canned sardine. This was enjoyable tin though I can’t say that I can discern that these were fried prior to canning. In the tin were 4 hearty sizeable pilchards with silver skin intact and very little to no evident scales on the fish (note that there was no noticeable sign of the fried prep). The texture on these was was enjoyable and I can describe as tender and softer and on the flakier side. These were mildly flavored and I had these with a vinegar based hot sauce and rice.

Wonderful tasting larger sardine. My first bite straight from the tin had me smiling and quickly going right back in for a second taste. Totally impressed with my first go with Ortiz, and product from Spain. The olive oil was so good. I bought two tins. The second tin is proudly visible on the shelf displaying the nice painted logo & info. Holding off opening the second until I can share it with my Dad! I would highly recommend these.

Highly recommended tin here! This was probably the most aesthetically pleasing tin I’ve had. The filets were the largest I’ve seen. The olive oil these beautiful ‘dines were swimming in added just enough flavor without stealing the show. I actually used the oil to crisp up some potatoes for breakfast this morning. Delicious. I will absolutely be a repeat customer.

Beautiful, large filets of sardines in this tin, and at a good price. The oil is great and the fish is meaty. Served on bread with a splash of fresh lemon juice is a go-to.

I cannot believe I have not reviewed this tin on RTG. I probably reviewed it elsewhere. Yeah, you can ask Dan, I was probably ordering 10-12 cans of these a month from him for a while there.

These are the supreme sardine. These tins have 3 of the fattiest Pilchards you’ve ever seen. You can eat them straight from the tin, you can fry ’em up, you can prepare them any way you like, they’ll handle it.

Big fat fish. Great salt level. Very, very tasty. One of the best. Buy them in bulk.
