Patagonia Provisions Lemon Olive Spanish White Anchovies

These are not the salt-cured anchovies you may be used to, these are the same type of fish but processed more like the way sardines are typically processed, tinned in olive oil.

  • Sourced from thriving, well-managed populations in the Bay of Biscay, off Northern Spain
  • Small-scale purse seines reduce bycatch and prevent overharvest
  • Anchovies reproduce fast, making them a more renewable resource than many larger fish
  • Our fishermen belong to centuries-old cofradias, or guilds, which share profits and encourage cooperation
  • Processed, seasoned and canned by a family-owned certified B Corp, also in northern Spain, that employs mostly women

120g (4.2 oz) tin

    Delicious, 10/10, slay, boots down

Patagonia anchovies are quickly becoming my favorite

Full of umami, incredible texture, and the oil is just incredibly mixed in with rice. I kind of wish there were more lemon in this one, but that’s obviously a very easy thing to add.

i ate the lemon olive anchovies with lentils and potatoes it was nice… um i didnt remember the note that was like there are bits at the bottom so i was just like yippee fish. i like how because theyre small you can eat the whole thing all at once!
the bits are nice i like the lemon.. its a pretty strong flavor which i really like. i thought it tasted really similar to a sardine.

Holy cow, these are some of the best anchovies I’ve had. Really good flavor, very nice firm fish, absolutely worth buying.

If you’re apprehensive about anchovies because of the salty pizza ones, try these, you won’t regret it!

I’m not sure what to make of this tin. The liquid + olives immediately transported me to a “this is beer” smell memory in a way that was neither good nor bad. It took me several bites to convince my brain that there was no beer involved. The lemon fragrance is nice as well as some lemon rind bits and 6-8 olive slices. The quality of the fish was evident and they had excellent texture (especially for a sardine-style anchovy). Less dry than most other competitors in this narrow anchovy space.

I love lemon-forward flavors, I love olives, I love having extra bits in the bottom of the tin to eat. But somehow, somehow this tin just didn’t … work for me. And I really don’t know why, as the quality is clearly there. At any rate, my search continues for any sardine-style anchovy that can compete with the brilliant Olasagasti Anchovies a la Basque. If you want to try a Patagonia anchovy for the first time, I would recommend the roasted garlic version over these.

First Anchovies experience! These look quite like sardines. Although this tin packs a punch with the distinct flavor medley. The lemon has a sharp bite, yet the olives act as a briny backdrop.

Pleasantly surprised by the dual layer, considering there were six packed in here… like ‘put up a fight’ packed in. At the bottom there was easily 10 olives. Firm. Savory, Slurp-worthy oil, akin to a broth. Not greasy. 100% would buy again!

I give this a 5 out of 5 and this will be something I will be picking up for future orders.

Fish had a nice firm texture and you get a good amount of anchovies in the tin. Flavor-wise, I appreciated that the lemon/olives/olive oil didn’t overpower the fish… and I was able to savor the clean and mild flavor of the fish. I ate this straight from the tin and also with some crackers, cream cheese, and capers and then used bread to sop up the leftover olive oil/lemon/olives from the tin.

This tin was beautifully balanced, flavor wise; a beautiful amount of acidity, really tasted the lemon more so than in other tinned fish I’ve had that contained it. The olives were great, the sardines were packed in there and undamaged. That being said, this was not the tin for me. I love all the ingredients in it, and I could not pinpoint why I disliked it, but I just did not enjoy it. I added it to some tomato sauce and ate it with pasta so that it would not go to waste, but am sad that it wasn’t to my taste!

This is the first time I’ve had what I consider to be a more high end canned fish and I have to say these blew me away. I honestly didn’t know there was other types of anchovies besides the extremely salty ones I occasionally have on pizza, but these were whole fish that were incredibly flavorful and the lemon added the perfect amount of acidity.

I knew after the first bite that these anchovies will become part of my tinned fish rotation. The lemon flavor is absolutely incredible and perfectly balanced and the anchovies themselves had quite a mild flavor, meaning this will be a great tin to whip out for guests who are new to tinned fish and afraid of fish that are too, well.. “fishy.” The olives balance out the zingy lemon flavor and create a gorgeous oil that I couldn’t help but dunk bread into. I ate these with a cold lemony herby potato salad (Alison Roman’s recipe if you’re curious) – 10/10 cannot recommend these fish more! Yum yum yum.

These are a staple tin for me. Just tried again after a break for a foray into various other RTG goodies- and yep, still among my favorites, or possibly my #1. The lemon flavor is perfect, the fish are slightly dry but in a good way- a nice change when eaten among moister sardines- and the liquid is somehow a lighter oil, kind of broth-y, I guess because of the apple cider vinegar. Also a nice chunk of lemon in the tin and several mild olive slices that are both really tasty- overall totally excellent.

Absolutely fantastic tin of fish. Have really enjoyed all of the varieties of White Anchovy from Patagonia.

If this is your first foray into sardine style anchovy you are in for a treat. There are not your standard salt cured (which are also delicious!) anchovy.

I find the texture to be slightly more firm than an average sardine. Tastewise, this is a great balance of citrus and oils, with the olives being a nice touch and really round it out. I already have my next Patagonia anchovy in my shopping cart.

    Definitely recommend!

A first, i was a little put off by the taste of the oil. It was a bit on the bitter side, and had almost no salt to it.
But, once I got a fish out I was stunned by the look of the Anchovies. The colors on the skin were beautiful, and only lightly marred by the processing of the fish.
Once i took a bite though, i noted they were a tad bit dryer than a sardine. Which resulted in a far sturdier and meatier bite, that felt more substantial to me personally. The seasonings were pretty light, soft salt from the olives and a gentle citrus freshness cutting through with the lemons. The oil itself needed a small bit of salt to brighten up, but once put on some rice with some salt it blew me away. 10/10 tin honestly, i may prefer the meatiness over sardines

A seriously wonderful tin of fish, with an excellent symphony of flavors that all play together so well! The anchovies have a great texture – meaty and just enough salt. Then the olive really shines through, followed by the brightness of the lemon. At first I thought I might end up liking the garlic version more – but these really take the cake for me and were such a delight! I honestly can’t wait to stock my kitchen with more. :’)

Great flavor with these, the lemon is pretty nice. Solid, firm texture. Pretty dry though. The olives didn’t really contribute much.

My first whole fish anchovy. Not for pizza. Meaty little sardine-like fishes in a flavorful lemon oil with olives. They were very good, but I think I prefer sardines and mackerel over these for just eating out of the tin. They were slightly dry.

I think I would really enjoy these in a pasta dish and will buy them again to try.

This is a delicious alternative of tinned anchovies if you don’t like the cured ones but don’t have access to fresh ones. These are a concentrated burst of umami in your mouth and you’ll definitely finish the tin before you know it. Tip: turn them upside down before opening to get all the olive and garlic goodness out of the can more easily!
